I've looked at alot of posts about power steering conversions but did'nt find a good answer. I got a 71 f100, 3sp. on the column, manual steering. I just got a power steering gear and pump from junk yard, out of a 72 automatic. the column was gone already,it would'nt have worked anyway. I need to find a straight drive power steering column or make mine work. The problem is I've never seen a straight drive with power steering and the junk yard man said they are very rare. Is this going to be a possible swap are is there a way to modify my column? I have a 351w in the truck so I am also going to need to modify or find a bracket for the pump. Any input would be gratly appreciated. I really want to make this work and still be a quality job. Thanks. Clint in North Carolina
John, I am in Huntersville, about 10 miles north of Charlotte on I77. I'll give him a call and see what he says. Thanks for the help. I know this thing will work,I've just got to have the right combination of parts and luck, oh and money!
[font color=red size=2]I added power steering to my '73 F100 2wd, it's a different body style, but this should still apply. Mine is a 4spd and the parts came off an auto. So I removed the center shaft from the two columns and swapped them (just remove steering wheel and pull shaft out bottom of column). The are identical except for the length - the auto vs 4spd didn't change the shaft. So I would say that you could pull the center shaft out of any 67-72 power steering column and put it into yours. Check it out, should work...
Just a thought.

sounds good! Automatic with power steering are much easier to find. do you think pump mounting brackets off a 302 will be the same as the 351w? or would brackets from any car or truck with a 351w work? Can't wait to get this thing in. Getting tired of trying to back my trailer with this manual steering, of course it's about the only working out that i do that is'nt work related. Thanks people!
Clint check out my Club FTE site, there is a link for the NCFTO that you might possiably be interested in. There are several in our group that is planing on meeting at Chimney Rock on the 15th at the Ford truck show there. Why don't you come join us.
You will have to have a shorter column shaft, there are only two lengths power and non. Your problem is going to be with the column shifting, and Rick may be able to help with that.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
Yea I know what you mean , I am in the process of doing this myself, I put in my power steering gear box today ,I also put in a new drag link, mine had alot of slop in it,
Mine is a 300 six with four speed manual,
I dont have my steering collumn yet but I dont think it will be to hard to find,
I was thinking about trying to find one with tilt wheel,
I dont have my pump brackets yet either,
I need to find a truck like mine with power so i can see what they look like, Good luck
Just went thru this with my three-on-the-tree 69. Just replacing the steering shaft won't work. The housing itself is shorter on the power steering column. You need to find a power column with manual shift. They are not as rare as you might think, particularly from the late 70s trucks. Or you could use your automatic column and put the shifter on the floor (I kind of like the column shift myself).
Thanks for all the help! I've looked at several trucks in the yards, I found a couple with manual columns but they don't have the gear box, they are all 73-79 trucks and I am not familier with those set ups enough to tell by looking at them rather they are power or manual. I'll get more information and check those out. John I looked at your web site NCFTO, as soon as I figure out how to get my sons userID off I think I'll try to join. It looked like there was a couple of members not too far from me. Thanks again, Clint
