I had my '97 4.6 4x4 checked out for a noise by a local shop. They said it was a spark knock. They checked my plugs and filter said the plugs looked a little worn but they were fine, they said i need a new filter, but i checked it and thought it was fine.
They charged me $0.00 and told me to use a higher grade of gas and see if that fixes it.
To my undesrstanding the spark knock is caused by the timing being off just a little correct?
Sometimes the truck only does it at 4k-5k rpms, other times it does it with the cruise set at 63 on the interstate turnin 1,700 rpm.
Since the timin is computer controlled how does it get off?
What do yall think about tryin an octane booster?
If I am gonna run 89 or 93 shouldnt i get a tuner since im already buyin the higher gas
The timing isn't adjustable but the PCM will adjust it to what it thinks it should be.
A dirty MAF sensor can cause a ping because it can make the PCM not really know how much air is going into the engine.
You might also try just a different brand of gas and see if that makes any difference.
Octane booster may help but that gets pretty expensive if you use it regularly.
I guess is hould inclued that i buy gas from everywhere. 76, BP, Sunoco, Hess, Pride, Walmart. Where ever is close when it gets low.
I will also say that i have had the inline fuel filter replaced that didnt change anything.
ford390gashog, no i did not replace the airfilter. They told me it needed to be but when i checked it i thought it was good.
If the maf is the sensor imbetween the TB and the filter, it looks perfectly clean and brand new.
