i have not got my 460 yet but i was wanting to know if i would have to do any big engine upgrades if i use this setup?? http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=27863 (tunnel ram manifold, dual carb setup, with the butterfly flaps . any advice is apperciated
I cannot get your link to open here on my PC but given your description I would say there's no "big' upgrades that NEED to be made to run a tunnel ram but it's really not the intake for anything other than a high rpm race motor. It will cost you a LOT of low end power which is fine for a big stroker motor or an engine that is operated only at high RPM's, but not for most engines that are street driven. There's no reason you couldn't run it, I'm just saying you probably wouldn't like it. As for dual carbs, they can be run on pretty much any engine if they're tuned properly for it. Tuning 2 carbs and keeping everything in sync can be a pain in the butt sometimes but it can be done. My suggestion, if you really do want to run 2 carbs, is to look for a Blue Thunder dual quad intake. They'll run about $400 and will allow you to run dual carbs without the tunnel ram.
Looks trick, but unless you have an 8000 RPM pro-stock screamer it is massive overkill. Great for bragging rights, but a pain in the anterior regions to tune, especially on a mostly stock engine where you are trying to get low-rpm street performance from a setup designed for high-rpm full-throttle thrashing.
If you want a looker setup for an open-engined street rod, go ahead. Just don't expect it to perform the way you think it will.
I've run them on stockers before. My SCJ actually picked up ET & MPH at the track. Thunderjet 429's & 460's are ok but a bit sluggish. The later 460's I had were a turd. Even ended up with 2 Holley 350 CFM 2-barrels... helped but wasn't worth it. Best to spend the money on internal parts
thanx ivan, brad, gtrmiler for the info. yall convienced me not to get it because this will be driven ALOT around town. i want it to have alot of hp and torqe but still be able to drive it around town and run on pump gas. what are some good mods i could start with that would give me noticable increase without braken my wallet????
If you do a search in this forum you'll find a wealth of information regarding horsepower build-ups for street driven rigs on pump gas. I don't know what kind of budget you're looking at but I'll give you a basic example as to the engine I'm running for the time being, which is a 460 bored .040 over (468). The whole lower half is stock and it's just temporary so I bought new heads, a new cam, roller rockers and pushrods and all that mess, a new intake, a new carb and headers. It's 9:1 compression so it runs on 87 octane just fine and puts out over 500 horse. I have about $3K into it, most of which is in heads. I bought aluminum heads because I planned to do a lot more with them later but that was almost $2K of my expenses. You can get cast heads from someone like Scott Johnston for less money, completely worked over and ready to bolt on or have a professional port the heads you already have.
These engines are easy to get a decent amount of horsepower out of.
