I have a 72 F-250 with some minor issues with the wiring. For some reason the coil is always hot I was wondering if it could be the ignition switch I can't find anything else. Also the wires that come out of the fire wall to the motor the coil wire, temperature wire and the other one, it is a white wire that on the diagram shows it going to the solenoid? Any advice would help also if anyone new where I could find nice diagrams or event pictures?
I thought that third wire was oil pressure also but that comes out of the firewall in a different place. The 72 doesn't have a gauge for oil pressure it just has a warning light that comes on. In some of the diagrams I've seen there is a wire coming out with the coil wire that goes to the solenoid.
dont know if the different models have different gauge sets but my 72 f-100 has an oil press gauge in the lower right hand corner of the panel.
i have three groups of wires coming through my firewall; the first group comes through on the left hand side (looking in from the front of the truck) all of these wires go to the starter solenoid, the voltage regulator, the alternator, and some unknown thing with a three prong plug mounted next to the starter relay. the second set of wires coes out of the right side of the firewall and goes to the lights and to the windshield washer resivoir motor ( or rather wher the resivoir should be. The third set of wires (four wires come out of the firewall and go imediately into a quick connect plug which has three wires coming out of the plug) is located almost directly over the right side valve cover, these wires connect to the coil Power stud, the temperature sending unit, and the oil press sending unit.
and lastly beit a gauge or a light an oil pressure sending unit is still required as is a wire to connect it.
I just looked at the wire harness again and the oil pressure wire does come out the middle but it is not one of the three wires that goes through the plug it comes out on its own
Sorry man your correct the guy that had the truck had the oil pressure sensor wired to nothing and cut off the correct one. Still curious as to why your truck has an oil pressure gage not a light. My other question if you know is when you take the gauge cluster out, on the left side there is a plug kind of like a trailer plu with three holes in it mine is plugged into two random wires that someone put in but the plug actually goes right into the main harness just wondering if it is supposed to be there? Thanks for any help
oldmansimek....yes the 3 hole tap is suposed to be there from the factory there was 1 wire (orange wuth a white stripe) comming out of it which actually goes to the wiper switch
Fritolay.... the "unknown" 3 prong plug by the selenoid is for a horn relay
