I don't have any idea where I picked it up at, what I've read on the internet says it was probably linked to something that was downloaded like a game, song, or video.

My wife got that 'junk' on her pc while doing school work.

Outlook Express and passing files from student to student is how she got it, I think. (She opens everything and doesn't scan it. . . ever!)
PC-cillin stopped it, but couldn't completely eradicate it.
Using the aforementioned PC-cillin, Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware, I was able to get rid of it. Oh, and I had to manually delete some files from the c:\System folder, too.

Lastly, don't forget to delete the Temp folder, too!

Thanks all.
I am using Opera now, and winfixer has not reared its ugly head once since switching. It might still be there, just not waking up until IE is opened.

Yes the system32 file is affected, also the registry and other stuff. I do not plan to download any bootleg "fix" as I fear it can make things worse.

Wolf - I do not know for sure where we got it. I use the computer, as does my wife and son. No tellin'......

A few other strange things...

Both Macfee and AVG will find a virus in c:\documents and settings\local service\local settings\temp internet files (wowz virus) but can't clean it.
Nothing in windows shows that directory tree even exists. Explorer and My computer do not show "local service" as a file in Docs and Settings.
I can use Search function and look for it (and wowz) and get nothing.

Some people should be bound, hung by their feet and have pickle juice poured up their nose holes.

edit: even opening a DOS window and looking does not show "local service" as a dir in Docs and Settings

What you have is a Vundo Trojan. Narsty bugger

Tech Support Guy Search results for getting rid of WinFixer

Get "HiJack This" and post the log in their Security Forum board but the above "Search" might help you in the meantime.

Have fun. By the way, this site is really great when needing help!

The files could be hidden. You can change the setting at the 'Folder Options' panel to show All Files.

WinFixer is a pain... but the peskiest i've had was some 1-800Search. I did a whole reformat and reinstall for that lol.

Well, I finally figued out how to get rid of the wowz***** file, so that virus is gone.

I'll let winfixer rest for now. I did open IE just to see. Within 10 sec. all the winfxer crap started.

Looks like steering clear of IE might just be the simple "fix".

it sounds like a browser helper object. BHO Demon keeps BHO's in check and eliminates them quite effectively. A router, spyware guard, spybot search and destroy, and BHODemon are all I use and my installation of XP has been problem free for almost 2 years - surfing with IE exclusively. As someone else said, HijackThis is another effective tool for getting rid of stubborn problems as well.

These system files are normally hidden. All you have to do is open Windows explorer then goto Tools, then Folder Options. Next click on the View Tab.
You will see in the bottom window Hidden Files and folders. Just select Show hidden files and folders.

Also deselect the next 2 option

Hide extension for known file types and Hide protected operating sytem files.

This will allow you to see the files.

I would start the computer in safe mode then you will be able to delete the files manually. Just delete everything under the c:\documents and settings\local service\local settings\temp directory and the temporary internet files directory.

NOTE: Don't delete the directory themselves, just the files and directories under them.

You can IM a tech through Messenger, ask for remote assistance, they respond and take control of your system. Go into the registry and remove all instances of reference to the file, after saving a copy to your desktop for restore purposes if it doesn't correct the prob.
