What causes this problem?

I have an automatic. When I shift from Park to reverse it jerks pretty bad going into gear. I have had the rear u-joint replaced. What causes this jerkyness? I want a smooth transition.

There are a number of possibilities for this. You could have excessive play in your ring and pinion gear in the rear end. There are U-joints on both ends of the drive shaft and some trucks like mine have a double roller croydon joint which adds another u-joint. The slip splines on the drive shaft itself could be worn, common problem in older trucks like ours. The worn splines can actually let the drive shaft flex up and down as torque is applied and released. There could be excessive play in your transfer case, more of a problem with the 203 then the 205. The chain in the 203 stretches with age. Hope this gives you some places to start looking.

Thanks. I just had a new 3.50 to 1 ring and pinion put in along with new wheel bearings all the way around. I will check the other areas you suggested. My drive shaft for my 4x4 is not hooked up so that rules out the transfer case. Thanks for the reply.

Could be possible the C6 transmition is just low on fluid, or has the wrong fluid in it.

I have a 78 f150 and had a similar problem when i bought it. this may not be the cause on yours but what i found on mine was the distributor was froze up in the block and had the timing advanced so the slowest i could get it to idle was about 1200 rpm.The aditional idle speed caused it to go into gears hard. I believe the idle speed should be about 800 in gear. I hope this may help.

This problem is something FORD is notoriously noted for.

Higher RPM's make it worse.

Idle speed is usually set at 650 in Drive.

The fix is to put some wheel bearing grease on the front drive shaft splines before installing the driveshaft .........and when that grease goes the distance...do it again.
