injecter pump??

HEy guys i got a 93 turbo, and the thing starts really hard, i mean it takes forever to start (i just replaced the glow plugs). and when i does get running, it idels real hard, rpm's do up and down, and then today i was driving home, and it just died. It did fire back up after i sat for a couple mins. But i am thinking it is the injector pump...maybe the fuel filter. I figure, you guys know alot more then me. is there any way to test it? oh and the millige is 176k

thanks for any help...sad thing i gotta break out my chev, beaucse the ford don't run..

change the fuel filter and give it a rich dose of fuel additive ... stanadyne or power service . make sure the fuel buy is from a clean source. if that dont work we can check the fuel return system (fuel leaks around the injectors, fuel lift pump, etc). perhaps stand pipe in fuel tank. we wont change the injection pump until last option. cheaper stuff first. see if you can get a history on the engine's maintainance.

Yes, I got the same 93' turbo and it started doing exactly what you have described.

I always added additive so I knew that was not the problem.

The problem was I was sucking in air thru the old injector return line connections and o-rings. Cold starting became really difficult, I sometimes stalled after starting and driving off.

Replace all the return lines and o-rings. The rubber get really hard and no longer seals. O-rings are about a buck a piece, need 16. Fuel hose is available at the local Autoparts store. or you can by the entire hose assembly at Ford, this will set you back a few bucks.

Good luck. Takes a couple of hours if you go the built it yourself route.

If the orings have never been done they definetely need doing after 12 years.

Thanks, i will look into that. I pulled the fuel line off where it conects to the fule filter, and cracked it, no fuel came out..so i was thinking fuel pump...what do you guys think? I am gonna go get a little diesel and fill the fuel filter up, and see if it starts right away...then i know the problem is not getting fuel to the filter.

I never had anybody that had a bad fuel lift pump so I am a bit hesitant to say that is your problem.

Note, the air that enters the fuel system thru the old return hose connections and o-rings will drain any fuel back to the tank as your truck cools off at night and that is why is is so important to do these first, I would expect the hose you disconnected on the filter to be empty as is is a high point were the air ends up.

I did install a Racor filter housing with a built in primer hand pump on my 93 that I use to fill my fuel filter after I change it. This avoids a lot of cranking you have to do before the filter is full and fuel actually gets to the IP. It will also save your starter which can burn up if you crank for too long.

If you don't have a hand pump just fill the fuel filter and bowl to the top with diesel from a cherry can before you screw it on. This will get most of the air out.

Maybe I should clearify this, If I pulled the inlet flare fitting off the Fuel filter and cranked over the motor shoud fuel squirt out of the tubing? It did not, I placed a finger over the end of the tubing while cranking the motor and did not feel pressure building, I only cranked it over for 4-5 seconds but it used to start in this much time. I blew back (with my month) towards the Fuel pump and could feel the air exiting thru the pump toward the Tank but very slowly, should it do this or is there a check Valve that should hold pressure? I checked and a new fuel pump is cheap ($25-30) so is there anything I should know before attemping to changing this out? Special tools?

Thanks Guys I think this site it great..

The new lift pump will probably have a straigt arm on it.
Follow the directions carefully so you do not damage the arm while you install it.

You should have about 5 PSI pressure on that line while cranking the engine over.

How much fuel is in the tank?
The fuel pickup tubes in the tank are known to break or crack.
If you are close to 1/4 to 1/2 tank this may be your problem.

As Dave stated above, plus cycle the FSV (fuel selector valve) several times, listen for a zziipp each time changed, door open of course with radio off........ Every time the selector changes tank the new fuel level will show on the new tank selected, you now know it is working.

Would you like to tell us what brand................
