dobly digital 5.1

Is there any way to get my computer to put out dobly 5.1 when i'm watching dvd's on it?

I have a receiver that supports 5.1, the dvd is in 5.1 and i have digital audio out (optical).

I'm using powerDVD.

Is this just something that windows doesn't support? or does my mobo not have the capability to do it?

you need to either have a motherboard or a sound card that supports the dolby 5.1 technology.

The optical will support the 5.1. Make sure you have up to date drivers for your sound card, and hook the computer to the stereo using an optical cable.

got it, it was in the config for powerDVD.. had to set it to spdif. then i had to select 5.1 on the dvd menu. This sounds so awesome. I just need to get a subwoofer now.

Is there anyway to get winamp or wmp to play in 5.1 with just mp3's? I'm guessing that the source file has to be in 5.1. Do they have just regular music CDs in 5.1?

your MP3s are most likely just 2- channel recordings. There are some 5.1 Music CDS out there, but you'll have to look for them and pay extra.

Personally, I like my music in 2 channels. I mean, you got two ears. Anything else is a bit too busy.
