Hi, is there anyone out there who knows how to get vacum wipers working. Or should I just give up now and install electric wipers. Me and my dad have spent several hours trying to get the ones on his 57 Fairlane working with limited success. The cars wipers go up alright but take about a minute going down. I have not played with the truck wipers yet, but I can only assume that I will be having the same problem again. Is there anyone out there who has had sucess. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Take the vac hose off the motor and spray some penetrating oil in the vac motr. Operate it by hand back and forth. THen reconnect the vac line. I've had good luck doing that. If not, you'll have to take it apart and really clean the gunk out. then use some vaselene on the flapper and put it back together.
i used the electric conversion from mid fiftys. couldn't have been easier to do. vacuum wipers work great at idle (when you don't need them) and don't work very well at speed (when you do).
What about using one of those vacuum boosters/canisters from a later model car? I'm thinking about ways to increase the productivity of the stock wipers w/o having to go electric.
