I'm making a '56 F100 out of collected pieces, and I need a steering column. I've heard that '53-'60 will work, but are they all the same? Is an F100 column the same as a F250-F350? If not can I make it work? TIA, Matt
Do you need just the outer column or the whole thing with steering box. I have an extra one that I was keeping around for parts because-worm gear and all seem good-The only thig is that the sterring shaft has neen cross threded (was like that when I got it) I thought that I could get a dye and re thred it, Just havent done that yet, And it is a column out of a 56.
To answer your question I know 53,54,55,56 ar the same or close, But as for 57-later I dont know, I belive the F250 and F350 column are the same.

Well, I was told that '56 was shorter than all the rest, I was also told the splined output on the ¾-ton and 1-ton were bigger, but I don't know if that would make a diffrence, and could be made to work. But then, I was also told all years and sizes were the same. All this was from seemingly reliable sources. And yes, kdmcinnes, I'd be interested in anything you've got.
Yes the columns are different lengths but are bolt in swaps.
The 53 to 55's are longer than a 56 but you can use the 53-55 columns in a 56 (even with the 56 wheel...but it is a tight fit against the seat) I would recommend the stock wheel or a flat aftermarket wheel
The 57 to 64s will work but the bolt pattern (to the frame is different)
you can also use f250 to F-500 boxes ( 53 to 56 for sure) but you also have to modify the frame bolt pattern
bigbackwindow- Do you know if the '57-'60 columns would share the shorter length of the '56? and if so, would it be possible to combine the shaft/tube of a '57 with the box of a '55 to create a bolt-in "56" column?
Ok I have played with all of these vintage boxes and I think that the 57 up column is even shorter than the 56
You can shorten the 55 shaft but you need to respline it....
I would not recommend this.
I used the auto column tubing from a 59 on a stock 55 box (Shaft) by welding a chunk of tubing on the end of the 59 and notching it to match the existing bottom of the column tubing. It then bolted to the 55 box.
It worked great
I would still be using it except I changed it all over to a TOY-OTA power box... Now I wont need shoulder surgery.
and with some further mods I got the TOY-OTA box to accept the 59 auto column tubing and shift linkage.
I have a what I believe is a good 56 column, box and wheel from a custom cab so it has the built in turn signals. I also have a ram assist style add on PS system. On all the worm and pinion style steering boxes thru 1960, the column shaft is an intregal part of the gearbox, so must be replaced as a unit.
There is a tech article about ready for publication on steering options featuring the Toyota PS box swap that discusses the pluses and minuses of the various alternatives.

Any chance you want to part with any/all of it?
