Rear Lock Not Working

I've got a 2000 Limited 4x4 Excursion and the rear lock on the lift gate will not lock anymore. I mean it won't even lock with the key!

Plus where's the best place to purchase new shocks to hold up the rear lift gate?

Thanks,
rlay302

Has the lock been getting harder and harder to use over time? If so, I would try soaking it in WD-40 to clean all the crud out of there, then use a silicone lube to lubricate the lock. If it is sudden, you will need to take apart the door and take a look.

As for the new shocks, I would call around to your local parts dealers and see who will give you the best price.

Yup, like mistercmk said, I've had to do it twice now. My problem is I do 16 miles of dirt each time I take the X out. Too much dust.

Yep, the old oil soak trick fixed mine too.

This is a well known issue with this and the four doors. The electric actuator needs to be replaced. Do a search and you'll find instructions. Actuator is $30-35 online.

It won't lock with the key, that tells me that it is something mechanical.

Here is the link to fordpartsonline where I just bought my liftgate cylinders. Add about $8.95 shipping. http://www.parts.com/partlocator/ind...00&catalogid=1. A very easy replacement. Make sure you have something to prop the gate open while you replace them. Also, check other threads regarding the difference between the 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive models. That couple of extra inches clearance really makes a difference if you do the 2-wheel drive model. Rockauto had a cheaper price on the cylinders, but the part is out of stock and they are not sure when they will get more.
