Trying to pull codes....no luck yet.

I am currently trying to pull the code from the computer in an 1988 F-150 w/ 302 and am not able to do so and I am trying to figure out why. When I connect the "Ford Code Reader", turn the key on and flip the switched on the code reader to "test" and "audio on", all I get is one long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. After about a minute the beep goes away, but the LED stays on.

Can anyone help?

Flip the switch to test before you turn on the key if you didn't before.

Yea the tester must be on before cranking the key. Its like trying to start an empty car and then putting the gas in.

With my Actron CP9015, I have the scanner off, turn the key on but do not start, then turn on the scanner. How is your scanner battery?

Well, the battery is between 3 and 5 years old...but it still beeps. And according to the manual (BTW this tool is made by Innova Electronics Corporation) if it beeps and the LED lights up the battery is fine. I suppose I could replace it anyways, but a part of me thinks that that would be a waste. What do you think?

How could I find out EXACTLY where to look to find the 6 pin and 1 pin connector? I noticed that under my dash there is a 6 pin triangular connector. There is also at least one under my hood. Is there a chance that I am not plugging into the correct 6 pin connector?

I have a 1988 E-150 and a 1988 F-150 to scan.

1990 F-150, 4.9. My plug is under the hood, behind the air cleaner housing, close to the brake power booster, by the driver side wheel well. There is the plug and the single wire (mine is gray). That is the plug you want to use.

bingo. just follow the instruction on the site on how to read the flashes and you'll be good to go. you may have to pull the codes more than once to get the hang of it, but it's not hard.

On the 1988 E-150 it is between the Battery and the Right Head Light (Pass.)

"I noticed that under my dash there is a 6 pin triangular connector." I do not know what this is unless it is for a remote start or somthing.
