Open to anyone that experiences the blowout issue in their aluminim heads. I purchased the kit from 'fulltorque' to redo the plug holes. I have the standard size and the oversize taps, as well as the complete kit. You get the inserts, pay for shipping to you and back to me, plus 75 bucks, and use it to fix the plug threads. I figure I can help out another plug victim, and they don't have to buy the 585.00 kit, plus inserts.
i just picked up a great condition 99 expy with 133k for $1000, and the #3 plug ripped out. i bought the heli coil kit for $50 bucks. it came with everything and i fixed the hole in 30 minutes applied some thread-loc and its holding .you dont even have to spend 20hrs removing the head, just tap and blow out the aluminum screw in the insert then the plug go.
i see alot of them at the dealer getting warrentied. also something to think about.
Good to hear it worked out. Just be careful as you are really not supposed to use a stainless insert inan aluminum head. They have a habit of moving after the threadlock burns up, the compund won't withstand the heat generated.
The dealer that did my original repair used that same method and 5 onths later, i was back with a stripped hole, valve damage, and a huge repair bill.
They make them out of hard anodized aluminum. There were only two companies that would guarantee that the insert would not come out. There is an issue with heat expansion differences in the aluminum head and the stainless insert that do not work well together, thus causing the insert's failure. I guess mine was an example. lol
