1978 ford ranger

I have a 1978 ranger that I use on my farm. It ran great when I bought it(351W-a real bad boy) many years ago from a 1 owner. In the last couple of months it has started running ruff-like only on 6 cylinders?. The other day I started it up let it run a minute and shut it off(it isnt ran a lot). I went back yesterday to use it and it would try to start-hit-but wouldn't start. It sounds like the timing is a very little off??? Any way a neighbor came up and first words he said was timing chain broke. I persisted and cleaned the dist contacts and it started and ran ruff a few seconds and quit-now doing what it did before. Can anyone help?

The timing chain could have jumped a tooth. However, it also could have sheared off the pin in the distributor drive. Everytime you advance the timing it will slip back on you. Also check the harmonic balancer. It may have seperated.
