( btw it is a 5 speed not auto)
There's a ball on the bottom of the shift lever that fits into a square well inside the transmission. The shift lever is essentially solid so, I'm afraid to say, the slop must be in the tranny.
Dont know if it's the same as my 87 Ranger. On the Ranger the ball that pilikoi mentioned is teflon & it has disintegrated twice & the pieces fall down inside the trans.
Had to get 2 new shift levers from Ford for OUCH 60 bucks apiece.

That's disconcerting. It's the same but I've never encountered a broken bottom ball, which could then explain the slop.
Yeah, when the ball disintigrates the shift lever gets VERY slopy
What was real dissapointing the last time it happened was that I was pushing the truck pretty hard -like I always do- in 3rd gear when I felt a jerk & heard a BANG.
The jerk & bang was the ball falling down into the trans & getting chewed up in the gears.
I'm surprised it did'nt damage anything.
Gotta love those manual trans, it takes a lot to hurt them.
i agree a most manuals can take its beating its safe to say in this case simpler is just more reliable and better
i on going to take a look under the shifter boot soon and locate this ball your talking about i have a feeling its on its way out , i hope i can find a way to replace the ball some how thansks for the info
also XLT if you hevent already, you should consider changing the trans oil since it has peices in it
today i looked at the shifter now that i see wut you mean by the litlle ball i can rest easy i was worried that the acutal rods in the transmisson used to move the inner parts was messed up and it would cost me alot of money for now im just going to go easy with it im not even driving yet until im 17 so ill prolly replace it in about 3 years wha really surprised me was the oil in tranny was clear as water it looked as if it was just added it is most likley the original oil too before i drive it im changing it just to ensure long trans life
