Howdy Y'all,
I have a 96 f-350 7.3 turbo weasel crew cab, awsome truck with over 300 grand on the odometer.... just rebuilt the oil cooler about 500 miles ago but my delema.....after running about 75 miles last nite it started to bog down like it was starved for fuel,as I let off the accelorator. So I replaced the fuel filter and switched back and forth on the tanks thinking it was filter or water in the fuel (couldn't find any h2o) ... no help.... it continued to run rough but smoothed out, but when I slowed down again it stalled..... I waited a few seconds and restarted and it ran kinda okay but not like it should.... smoothed out at idle and than ran about 15 miles when it died again, as I was slowing down and letting off the pedal... long story but I stopped half way into the west bound lane of rt. 50 on 329,,,, no biggy but the onconmming truckers were not happy... anyway I coasted out of the hwy. and out of the way of the 18 whlers. Phew....and it restarted, made it home about 3 more miles than this am. (several hours later and much cooler motor) it would not start or if it did it would idle really rough, than die... put it up on the roll back and saw a bunch (maybe a qtr cupjust looked like a gallon) of oil dripping off the motor. The tow guy who runs lots of the same motors in his trucks said it was more than likely the Fuel Injector Pump.... Sounds expencive but that's been the case all along.... thease things don't break cheep. Okay enough story,,, the question I have is.... I can't be re-inventing the wheel but should I look at any other things or better put does anyone have any good advice as to what else it may be????
Thanks for your time...
JT

Hi and welcome to FTE! Be sure to read this to help you around this site: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...88#post3272088 There are also State, Provincial and International Chapters located near the bottom of the main forum page.
We are glad to have you. Hope you enjoy the site. Check out the various forums. Lots of great info for you.
Thread moved to 1994.5-1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel forum.
I would'nt trust your tow guy as your truck don't even have a fuel injector pump. Sounded like the symtoms of a cam sensor except the oil leak. Did you check your oil level?? These trucks wont run if their low on oil?? Need a better idea of where the oils coming from to help on the leak....
hummm,,,, that adds a bit of confusion, I may be using some incorrect termonolgy but something has to pump fuel outta the tanks to the motor and subsequently to the injectors??? We will check the oil level and see if we can find a better discreption of where the leak is. And find the Cam sensor to check it as well.... Thanks for replying
I know just enough about this to break it really well in case you can't tell...

I think it may be a little of both, I have been catching a wiff of diesel at odd times, eluding to some sort of fuel leak but when I saw the drip I stuck my finger in the puddle and it and it had a great deal of oil like viscosity but didn't smell or taste it to see if it had diesel in it. News flash... My wrench just called and tells me the Oil Pan is cracked and leaking badly,,,,, Must be the low Oil sensor doing it's job.... He put about 2 gallons of earl in and it ran fine except for the major leak in the pan.... we are replacing the oil pan and will go from there....
anything else you can think to check? I am a bit bothered by the wiff of deisel I am getting occassionaly.....
Thanks I apprecieate your expertease...

Okay, the leak is arround the o-ring on the dip stick holder in the pah, I had this happen about 100,000 miles ago and we managed to replace the o-ring without pulling the motor. But I guess I caught it before the oil level dropped below the alert level... The Mech working on it right now is not really confident he can do it but I told him how we did it before and hooked him up with the wrench that did it so we'll see what happens. PHEW?!?!?!?! I was thinkin I blew the motor and was lookin at replacement. Now I still need to figure out why I catch a wiff of deisel fumes everyonce in a while... Any Suggestions would be really apprecieated...
Whats nice about the powerstroke is that if you run low on oil it will shut down and not run before you will do any damage. The injectors take oil to fire and it'll run out of oil in the high pressure pump. What I was meaning before is that the Powerstoke don't have a conventional Injecton pump like older diesels. It uses a fuel lift pump, A high pressure oil pump and the injectors themselves.
Howdy Ya'll,
Okay we managed to get the leak fixed at the dipstick holder on the oil pan, without pulling the motor.... the cps?? Cam sensor and wireing harness under the valve covers check out okay...
The wiff of diesel I keep getting is a crack on a "fuel line fitting" on some sort of capicitor (sp) or electronic gizmo up on top somewhere that should be back together this Monday and I should be back on the road again,,,, hopefully for another 300 thousand miles.... Thanks for all of your suggestions.
Later,
Jon T.
