Talking I need better MPG

Bear with me, I'm new here.
I have a 2003 f350 crew dually 7.3 with 410 rear. I get 14+ stock. Bought a SuperChips tuner and on level three I get about 16 with out my heavy foot and staying of the interstate on the way to work....nothing looks better in the rear view than a Benz in black! My question is, I have ordered the Stage II afe and a AIRID spacer. I will bough a 5" exhaust system in a couple of months. How much better can my milage get and should I worry about exhaust temps until the new exhaust is ordered? I pull 22000 Ibs of land clearing tractor and trailer about twice a month.
P.S.....Like the web sight!

Do u have gauges? Your mileage is pretty normal for 4.11 gears and crew cab dually.

Welcome to FTE Hotwheelbill

haha you cant complain about 16mpg with a 8500 pound truck with 6 tires and a 7.3 liter engine. that is like buying a Geo Metro and complaining because you can't get three of your 250 pound buddies in with you. i'd be happy with 16mpg if i were you.

yes i wouldn't run in anything more than the "tow" program without gauges. you don't know how high those exhaust temps can get with 22000 pounds in tow and an aftermarket program loaded in.

see ya around

Welcome to the site, and congradulations on your new truck! I think I would have went with the exhaust system first. Together they help your EGT's alot, but without having guages and running a tuner you may be surprized just how high the EGT's are getting. The exhaust will let all those hot exhaust gasses out faster. Alot of guys run a aftermarket replacement filter with the 7.3L without changing to a clod air system and have no problems. Our Company has a 2000 Excursion with everything Banks sells and an aftermarket replacement filter and the EGT's stay very cool. Our 05 F350 4X4 has the SCT tuner, BullyDog 4", and an AirRaid cold air system. Give us a call we can help you out.

I have a 01 Crew with a 7.3, dually, and 4.10 rears. Stock mileage was about 14, I put the 4 inch exhaust, the edge attitude and edge evolution, afe stage 2 intake, etc. At 70 mph which is about 2300 rpm i get 15 on the highway. At 80 mpg, i get 13. I asked the same questions your asking about a month ago, and basically once you get over 2k on the rpm guage, its gonna burn diesel. So anything over 63 mph, the mileage is going in the tank. Add a heavy foot to pass people, bump the cruise up to 80, and your at 13-14 mpg at best! With my edge attitude on setting 2 which is tow, I can easily reach 1250+ on the egt with my 4 inch exhaust, this is while pulling a trailer and tractor that weigh 20k plus the trucks weight. If you dont have guages, Id get a pyro asap. Your dually will never get the 18 mpg + you hear stories about, basically they are all fiction. You will get 10-15 though!

Does anyone know how to check what kind of gears you have? I was guessing 373, but not sure. Any help?

pyro, or pyrometer, measures the exhast gas temperature. Your turbo and system does not like life over 1300 degrees for very long.

O.K., I,m sold. Maybe the VISA needs a work out.
Now , the 5" motoblue aluminized system from RPM was about the cheapest with 14 guage mandrel bent, most others are 16 guage. Is there any difference in power or milage from one maker to another or stainless to steel?

1300+ degrees = melting pistons . Bad mojo. Add fuel, add heat...dont monitor it....roll the dice. You decide

Stainless will last a looong time. It is a high carbon stainless, so it will still get a flaky/surface corrosion on it, and it will eventually go bad....but we are talking years and years. Any aftermarket exhaust is going to improve over the small-ish stock system. Even a cat back helps. There are many, many choices. Personally I do not subscribe to the theory that a 5 or 6 inch system is worth the additional cost unless your really adding some serious fuel and air....such as a race or truck-pull situation where the truck is hard core. A 4" system is great, and you can find some real nice priced systems out there. As for power between the differant makes....it is not likely that one will add a whole heck of alot over another....but they will all help maintain lower EGT's and free up some power over stock.

Feel free to look us up if you need any help finding anything. We carry just about everything you could want for your truck.

Welcome to the site, and welcome to the Ford family of vehicles!
