My 2001 Ford Windstar check engine light came on yesterday. It has 45K and in pretty good condition. Anyway, I pulled codes and got a P0171 (bank 1 lean) code. Anybody have any ideas on what could cause this? I have a generic scanner that can monitor a few things, but I don't know what to look for. I believe that all the O2's are switching, but I'm afraid that it might be something like the upper intake gaskets. Sorry to be so vague, but I'm trying to avoid going to the dealer.
Call up the Ford 800# in the manual and ask to see if the O2 is covered under the emission warranty. I believe it is (8yr/80k mi) but call to make sure.
go to Ford dealer you bought the van from and see if they will help you with warrenty claim, they may be able to "persuade" Ford to pay, if not, the dealer will want $100 up front to diagnose on their system scanner.
looks like O2 is NOT on 8 yr/80k list of major parts
On an 01 Breakwindstar there are quite often problems with vacuum leaks that can cause the P0171. The upper intake gaskets leak, the hose to the fuel pressure regulator leaks and the PCV hose might not fit tight on the intake manifold.
There is also an updated calibration (reflash) for the PCM.
