power steering pump bugs

Got my 79 Ford f150 4x4 351m back home now, engine runs great. Now the factory PSP that has been sitting for 6 years will not work. Put a new reman NAPA PSP w/in line filter unit on, and after doing all the "air bleed" methods I found in the search archives, I still cannot get it to work. .

I jacked the truck up and put in on stands, turned and locked out the wheels full left and right MANY, MANY times. Even when in full lock, the PS pump never gives out that "loaded" up sound. Everytime I shut the engine off the PSP "wheezes" and I can hear and feel air around the tightened filler cap, lots of air bubbles in the type F trans fluid. . No visible leaks tho.

Is there a way to see if the system can maybe be sucking air in, yet not leaking under pressure ? Or is it new PSP time ? I have the more HD NAPA PSP unit # 206244 w/in line filter picked out as the next replacement, but dont want to drop a 118 bucks on it if, I have other problems I can find and fix. Many thanks

Those pumps can be a pain in the A** to bleed the air out of. I have a 78 F-150 with a 351M. I put a couple of pumps on thinking it was just a bad pump. But after 3 i thought it was the steering box. Finally got it bled though. I worked on it for 6 hours straight. I finally got it. I turned the wheels lock to lock just sitting there, i also found that it helped me when i drove it around making tight turns stopping frequently to fill the resivoir. i would say just stay at it a little while longer before you buy a new gearbox.

you might have a blockage in the steering box. take the high pressure hose off the pump and shoot compressed air down the hose. the air should go right through and back out the return line if not you have a blockage.

I am not much of a auto mechanic , and after looking at this PSP closely I dont get it. On a closed loop hydraulic system like this, how does the air get "bled" automatically out of the system, but not also get pulled back in by the same exiting means ? Like I said, everytime I shut the engine off, I feel and hear this air "hissing" around the tightly closed PSP cap. To me, it looks like air could be pulled in thru the PS cap, just like it exists. Very puzzling,

Have you taken it on a real road test drive? Not just idling in the driveway? I wonder if maybe something is blocking the fluid lines and maybe taking it on a real run to "jar something loose" on the roads might help?
