engine making noise

the engine in my 79 started making an odd noise while I was driving it. it sounds like a pinging. i asked a couple a people there opinions one said it sound like it was coming from the bottom end. could be a spun bearing he says. the other guy thinks it could be a valve or a stuck lifter. What do you think.

Pinging is from the upper cylinder area.

Clunking is from the crank area.

2 different type sounds.

You will hear bottom end clunk better with the engine under load.

A cold startup will usually really show a failing bottom end, as there is no oil pressure when you first start. But as mil1ion said, the sound needs to be confined to either top end or bottom.

I knew a guy with a 5.0 in a truck and went for a ride with him. I heard a knocking kind of noise and told him the bottom end is about to go. He said no, that it was just the plastic gravel shield underneath flapping in the wind.
A few weeks later, a rod came out the side of the block.

Either way, find out soon. You may be turning a rebuildable core into a boat anchor.

Ummm, it's usually best not to check your oil level by waiting until it runs out. That practice leads to situations like trinogt mentioned.
