(Pardon the spelling) Mt Pinatubo, the volcano that erupted in the Phillipines I believe a few years ago. Documented fact: That one eruption put more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere than all the automobiles throughout history.

I too firmly believe we need to take care of our planet, but global warming is a BIG money business. If its not continually hyped up, people stop giving to its causes. That's fine for some but when it cost others money and jobs, screw the spotted owl and the tree he's in.

 

Those spotted owls are over-rated. It took 4 of em to set a decent Thanksgiving dinner last year, and there were only 4 of us.

Mount Baker got 112 inches last week. They had to shut down the ski resort because of avalache danger last Thursday. It's still not open as far as I know.

But I will be ahppy when I can grow palm trees year round and the road crews don't have to sand.

 

I'm thinking your original post might have been mis-interpreted. There's two components to the GW question: "Is it really happening? and "If so, what's causing it?" I have a good friend that does statistical analyses on metal fatigue (Harmonic vibration analysis). He used to design submarine hulls at TRW- that requires building a statistical model, and being right the first time, since you don't have the opportunity to "test" with 300 men on board during the first dive test.

Anyhoo- the guy really is a rocket scientist (yeah, was on the space shuttle design team too). He really is concerned about GW- but claims we would need at least 5 million years of data to come up with a model that had a better than 50% probability of being right. We have roughly 100 years of accurate data- do the math. He gets particularly annoyed with scientists that are certain this condition or that has been filled to cause some unspecified disaster. Where's their data? On what basis?

 

Well, you got me... considering we have submarines that patrol in and around the north pole (that means they would have to be under the ice ) Oh, and i bet you didn't know that there is a new glacier forming on Mt. St. Helens right now. doesn't prove anything other than there is a life and death cycle for EVERYTHING!!!

 

Yup, you're right. I'm not trying to argue the point one way or another, just "personally" trying to not keep my head in the sand. But, just to be fair, when you get a chance sometime do a search on Glacier National Park. Interesting info. Their almost gone.

5 million years is a loooong time. The same methods are used as in calculating dinosaur bones, scientific theory. I aint no scientist, or even a cave man. But there is apparent evidence that glaciers and all that other frozen stuff in our world is melting faster than ever before, (as far as they can tell). That is just what I am hearing from alot of scientists. Not all of them, but should I ignore a possible real threat just because they all don't agree. Maybe I should since there aint anything I can do about it anyway. Like I said, I'll just look forward to that beach front property and palm trees theory.

 

Global Warming is a farse.

First it was save the rainforest, then save the whales, then save this and save that, now it's G.W......It's a fad.

Environmentalists are whacked.

The earth has been around for 4 Billion years (roughly), and there have been literally thousands of climactic swings and shifts in our history, from ice ages, to warm ages, to ice ages, time and time again -- well before human intervention or "CFC's," mind you -- There have been large shifts in atmospheric formulation, and chemical content, far beyond the comprehension of most fanatic enviro-whackos of the last decade. We've been keeping record of temperature and climate for such a short period of time, a micro-second on the Earth's clock, that to panick or to even take note of such a miniscule variation, is absurd.

 

This just from a guy that constructs statistical models- and has for over 40 years.

The dinosaur analogy is perfect. We know- within 100,000 years or so , when they died out. Climactic cycles play out over 10's of thousands of years. It doesn't mean we should ignore it- but there's no way of knowing whether this is part of a larger "normal" cycle, or something else. We simply don't have enough data points- but to listen to some scientists, it would appear that they've somehow managed to fill in the blanks.

 

Doing the Research on global warming is a make work project and a way to get money from the government to stand around with their finger in the air testing for climate change

Some would say that if global warming didn't occur, we would still be in an ice age.

Maybe it's a cyclical.

Where did the ice go?

Something is keeping us warm.

I think it's a natural occurrence, and necessarily caused by man.

Absolutely!!!!! I completely agree with this. And what I am saying here is only that I should not, and will not ignore it. I am not convinced of it's validity (GW) but IF humanity might be having an adverse impact, wouldn't it be reasonable to consider changing our direction a bit. Even only to stay open minded as to the implications and error on the side of survival? I'm not sure of the answer but shouldn't we at least be seriously be asking ourselves this?

I am driving the heck out of my big F350, and my 460 Highboy and loving it. It is great to be able to enjoy these things. I am not sure if automobiles are the reported "main ingredients" to the GW thing. I believe the suspected culprit is more industry etc... And as for the natural succession of the planet, YES that is correct. The earth has been and will continue to warm. No issue here at all. What I have heard though, is that what we humans are doing is "possibly" speeding the process up by a huge multiple. This theory has been rationalized by these scientists by occurrances such as the melting of glaciers at Glacier National Park (and others). I guess there are ways to determine what the glaciers consisted of millions of years ago, and they estimated how much they had declined over given periods. Apparently, they have determined that they have been declining more in the span of one persons life time than what they had declined in the past over a thousand year period. That we are witnessing changes that we would not normally witness as we don't live that long. They also have stated that this escalation is expected by some to increase, meaning that the process is expected to occur even quicker as the situation compounds.
Don't shoot me, I'm just parroting what I saw on that GW show a few months ago. That was kind of a wake up call for me. It was not a Pro GW thing. They hit on both sides of the argument. And I am not trying to do anything here but expose the fact that THERE ARE two sides here. Let our conscience be the deciding factor to guide us on our personal beliefs, and possibly energize us to research the fuel for our decisions.possibly possibly
