As many of you know, a year and a half ago I bought a Galaxie 500 with a 352 4bbl. I got it finished (body-wise) last fall and put in my garage just before the snow started flying here in Iowa. Well, strangely enough we have had a pretty mild january. Weird for Iowa. Today was darn near 50 degrees. So I fired up the Galaxie and snapped some photos, FINALLY!!! Check out my gallery and tell me what you all think. This spring I am putting new wheels and tires on her. I am torn between traditional classic-car rims like the Cragar SS and Torq-thrust D's and newer, more modern alloy mags. What do you all think? Should I go with the Cragars(I think they are always sweet) or some more modern rims? I seriously value your input, because I am at a loss here. Thanks!!------Ryan
Your not the only one with a very mild January. we broke records here in Oklahoma today but we need rain. Your Car looks fantastic. I think it looks great as is but you can't go wrong with Torq-thrusts.
Man, that takes me waaaaay back. I owned one exactly like yours in 1967, same color even! You have a beautiful car. Glad to hear she's nice and cozy in that garage.

Stick with classic wheels, unless you're doing a total custom. Big and overdone wheels are out of place on a resto. They ride poorly, go flat quick, and bend easily. Besides, they will go the way of the 8-track before long.
Have you noticed yourself looking at just the wheels when they're big and overdone? It's like they bought a rig to drive the wheels around.
It's also sad to buy the bottom of the line round hole w/rivvetts, even worse, chrome or gold.
Stuff the fattest Cragar or Torq-thrust under there you can
Hot ride, love the style, always loved the interior in those Galaxies.

Thats one Very Nice car! IMHO, Most modern rims will ruin the beauty of that car, turning it into a Ghetto Cruiser. The Cragar SS aren't bad, but with all the chrome and stock appeariance of your 4 door, I think the hubcaps look the best. maybe some wider rims, whitewall tires, and stock looking hubcaps. Or maybe you can find a company that makes modern alloy rims that look similar to the 60's hubcaps?
Nice thing about wheels is you can swap them any time. Do what you want but hang on to the stockers, I know you would.
Even ol dad could appreciate nice wheels.
In the old days, even before that vintage they loaded the trunk with sand bags, and put wheels on, honest hotrodders.
Ha ha, thanks guys. My biggest fear would be putting wheels on it that would make it look ghetto or gangter. I want it to look period correct, but those stock hubcaps(man are they expensive) just don't look "flashy" enough for me. The other, big thing is that those stock rims are so narrow it's hard to find decent tires for them. Right now it has old bias-ply tires on it. And I have the sears reciept from when they were mounted, June of 1974. They are SCARY. So far it seems to be a tie between Cragars and stock. I had no idea people would even consider the stock setup as good looking, but I guess they arent too bad.
I think the torq-thrust-D's would look pretty cool. Kinda almost period correct anyway. They are a little less flashy than the Cragar SS's but a bit more expensive. You could also get Moon dog dish hubcaps and paint the rims black or body color. Anyway it's a sweet lookin ride ya got there! Foose has that 22" bling should you feel the urge.
14 in. tires, I would not want to go too awfully wide with them though, at risk of encountering a fender clearance problem. And radials are a must, as I have found that drving at freeway speeds on bias ply tires is not something cool. Probably 14X8 is th widest I could go.
Also check out Coker tire. They make lots of vintage looking tires with todays technology. I remember watching a show on speed about them. Pretty interesting and they went into detail about using radial tires on old rims that used the bias-ply tires. Something you might want to look into.
