Trans modulater

How do you change the modulater on a 90 4.0. I can see it but can not see what holds it in. I'm disabled and can not get my hand up in there to feel whats there, I'm going to have my son help me but would like to know how to do this so I can tell him how it goes. Thanks for any information I can get on this problem. Allen

small steel finger flange extends around neck of modulator which sticks into transmission....flange held down with small short bolt, 10mm head...bolt is above modulator and goes into side of tranny case
after hold down flange is removed, modulator slides out of transmission hole...watch out...small pin (throttle control valve rod) in end of modulator that sometimes stays inside transmission...reach in and pull out...can drop on ground and hard to find...about 1" long x 1/8" dia.
inside will be throttle control valve which can come out

coat inner parts of new modulator and O ring seal in ATF and reinsert with rod in end

from service cd
can upload a pic from service cd if you need or cd iso file is avail at > if you have burner

http://www.fordcds.com/
use 93 truck has Aero w A4LD

5. CAUTION: Make sure the throttle control valve (7D080) moves freely in the bore.

Install throttle control valve, throttle control valve rod (7A380), vacuum throttle valve diaphragm (7A377) and vacuum diaphragm clamp. Hold in position by tightening M6 x 12mm screw with a 10mm wrench to 9-12 N-m (80-106 lb-in).

Thanks, that will help us alot. Will the modulator come out with the exhaust not being moved? Looked like close work in there with the heat shield in place.

The heat shield is held by a 10mm nut. So just get a 10mm wrench or socket to take that off first. Then remove the heat shield.

The modulator hold-down fingers (similar to what was used to hold down distributors in the old days) is held by a stud, onto which the above heat shield nut was bolted. This is again another 10mm stud, which requires a 10mm deep socket or a boxed end wrench. Once you take the stud off, the modulator can be pulled straight out. Pay attention to a black steel pin in the modulator or in the hole. You must reuse that pin, so don't lose that.

Putting the new modulator in is easy, just make sure the black pin goes in the modulator first, and the O-ring is there, and lubricate that O-ring with some Mercon before you put it in.

There is no need to drop the exhaust. It's tight, but doable.

Good luck

I have a 1993, 3.0, modulator was a snap. Again, watch out for the pin and trans fluid WILL come out in your face if you are not ready.

Well I got the modulatoer changed and it still doing the samething, not shifting not shifting when cold. once it warms up it runs good but when it cools down no shifting until you drive a ways. You have to shift it in to 2nd gear with the shfter, then it will shift into 3rd once you get up to speed. I guess it will have to go to the tranny shop this week.

how old is ATF and was there a full 10 qt change done along with filter? mileage since last change and any tranny overheating?

if it has an old dacron pad filter that is partially plugged, when fluid is cold, restricts pump intake and line pressure.

may also be worn, failing govenor located on back shaft inside tranny, controls lines pressure based upon fluid temp, tranny loading and pump rpm

Only about 7-8000 miles on the filter change. No over heating, no problems with it at all before this.

Besides the modulator, which you already changed, there is a 1-2 shift valve in the valve body. If that one is stuck, you will have problem shifting out of first. When it's cold, does it shift normally if you go to 1 first and then shift the lever manually from 1 to 2? If it shifts OK, my bet is on the 1-2 valve being stuck. If that's the case, your bet solution is to remove the valve body, buy a set of valve body gaskets (say $10 from the local tranny shop), and start disassembling and cleaning all the valves in the valve body. It's time consumming but not expensive at all.

While you are at it, drill a hole on the pan and ask the local muffler shop to braze a nut on the outside so you can use it as a drain. If the filter is new, you can just drain and fill a couple of times to get rid of the old fluid completely.

Good luck

P.S. what's the mileage on this tranny?

Oh man....call me a complete bonehead / noob. I've looked over my tranny I don't know how many times. I've pulled off the inside cover to let more light in, cralled in from both sides and even had a buddy of mine look and we can not seem to find a vaccuum line coming off to indicate where the modulator is. I've downloaded said CD and have dug through the tranny section and can't seem to find the modulator there either. Really feeling quite dumb right now. Can somebody please point out where the modulator is hiding on a 94 Aerostar with a 3L engine?? Is it any different than the 4.0L??

Thanx a ton!!!
