I have a factory, under the cab fuel tank on my 54 ford pick up that I want to put a strainer on the end of the pick up tube inside the fuel tank. My question is: Can I use aluminum for the strainer? Will aluminum break down over the years? Also, is there something already made for this application? Thanks. Ross
Hey there,
Thanks for the reply to my strainer question. Yes, I was having a gas flow problem, and it seems that I have narrowed it to the "pick up" tube in the gas tank. No, it does not have a strainer at the end of the gas tank pick up tube, just an open hole. I used a mirror on the end of a small tube and a flashlight to see if there was any sign of a strainer at the end of the pick up tube. No sign of one nor any sign that there ever was one. So, I want to put one there. I can not take out the tube unless I do some un-welding and re-welding. I don't want to do that. I think I have devised a way to put a make-shift strainer on the end of the pick up tube. All I have is some aluminum mesh. So, my question is: Will aluminum decompose when submurged in gas for extended periods of time? Thanks. Ross Jordan
Aluminum won't be affected by gasoline, most carbs are made from aluminum. You may be better off removing and cleaning the tank, and install a large capacity filter near the begining of the line, maybe a large canister type from a diesel.
