On saturday I was at a friends house and I heard a loud belt squeel come out of nowhere on my 94 Limited. I open the hood and my alternator pulley was completley seized. Not a big deal. It was the factory unit so was pretty old as it is. I go to Autozone and grab an alternator, the install was easy, and I threw a gatorback belt on too. Well I start it up and my amp gauge is reading low and my battery light is on. I figure hey maybe my battery just needs a charge. I drive it and nothing changes. Now my whole electrical system; i.e. charging system is screwed. I went back to Autozne and they gave me another alt so I installed that and I have the same exact problems. Any one have any clue what's going on here? This is the correct alternator for the limited because I do know they had higher rated alt's then all the other models. I'm reall confused and pissed. This is my winter car and I really don't want to drive the Mustang in the snow. But it seems as if the alt is doing nothing and all the accessoires are just running on battery power.
Here is the wiring diagram. As you can see there is a fuse in the power distribution panel in hte engine compartment (15Amp) and also a fusible link. Either one could stop the charging. Also be sure to check all of the grounds. If the alternator is not fully grounded all the way back to the battery, this problem will exist as well. Lastly, make sure that the connection to the alternator is good. Some of these plugs required replacing when the alternator is replaced. If yours needed it, a new plug should have come with the alternator.
