I am helping a buddy of mine start to get his 84 F150 ready for a complete repainting. We are going to take off as much of the trim and annoying little things to cut down on the cost. The problem is that somebody put a Herculiner roll on bed liner in the truck, it looks pretty well put in, but he wants to know if we can get it out somehow without using some extreme measures. Would sand blasting take this off?
I'd pass on sand blasting, it'll work but sand blasting is best on a hard surface like paint or rust. It does very poorly on things that flex like rubber or road tar, it really slows down.
If you are looking to just get a cleaner newer bed liner, I'd re-apply another coat of herculiner. Mine started to look faded, so I bought another gal and scrubbed the heck out of the old one with soap and water, the applied a new coat and it worked out great.
If you must get it off, I'd start with a chem stripper. Home Depot sells some and it should work. You can also try a heat gun and putty knife. Either way, this looks like one messy long job.
You can put chemicals and let it sleep with them (8 hours or so), giving it time to penetrate, after it softens, then try to scrap it with a metal brush (an electric one should work even better)
