Value

I haven’t posted in a while. I have been busy building my nest. I just recently finished a new house, got married and now have a little one on the way. So, with that said, sometime in the next eight months I may be leaving the F-150 owner fraternity for a while (unless I get a Super-Crew). A car seat just doesn’t fit into a Regular-Cab very well.

Since I’m probably going to sale or trade what I have, I would like to have your opinions on the value of my truck. You folks know these trucks and you know the market for these trucks.

I’ve done Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, and NADA. I know the general range. But I want the opinions of Ford owners. I have asked subjective questions that have many variables that dictate the answers. I just want to get a good offer when I decide to move it.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
<O</O
1. What would be a fair price to ask for my truck described below?

2. How long to think it would take to get it sold.

3. What would be a fair trade-in offer?

4. Would I get a better trade-in offer at the dealership where I bought
my truck? (Long Lewis Ford, Muscle Shoals, Alabama)

For comparison, I have an 04 SCrew, two tone, not a scratch or a ding, looks like new with 48,000 miles on it. Best offer for a trade-in at several other brands dealerships has been $12,000. One dealership flat told me he didn't want it. The new F-150 has a bad reputation. While I can agree with him that the 04 has and still has issues, I didn't expect to take this much of a bath on a truck that window stickered for $31,965. I can only hope that you fare better with your 05.

words can't describe that offer, $12,000 for a two year old vehicle that listed for $31,000. The dealer must have been high on something. :-)

Did that happen at a Ford dealership?

I was told by someone else not to expect over $18,000 on a trade.

Brannon, how much did you pay for it? Not sticker, but what you paid.

Just traded in my 2002 scab Lariat, 30,000 miles, moon roof, pretty well loaded and I got a whole sale of 17,500 for it. Was aver a grand more that KBB listed it for trade in value.

That's a good place to check though. You can get trade in value or private party sale price there. Don't count on getting near what you have invested in on your after market stuff. This stuff is almost a give a way. I had a nice fiberglass cap on my 150 which cost over a grand but didn't add near that much for it as to it's value. Try KBB.COM

If one follows the used vehicle ads they will find that used vehicles are a drag on the inventory of a Dealer. Used vehicles do sell, but not for prices that include trade in price, check and repair, salesman commission, and lot space. Used vehicle just do not bring in the profit a Dealer would like.

When I bought my new '04 the dealer just told me outright that he would like to see me sell my current '93, with 60K miles, on the open market. The Dealer never even looked at my '93. I did sell my pristine '93 for $150.00 over top book (that is Dealer's price plus $150.00). My Dealer never even wanted it even though I was, and did, pay cash for my new '04.

Trade ins just don't bring it.

I agree, you will never do good when trading a vehicle. You will always be upside down. I have traded seven times and been upside down every time. This last time when I bought my F-150, I traded a 2004 toyota tacoma double cab. They gave me $15,000.00 for that truck. I owed $21,000.00. Two weeks later I went by their used car dealership and they had it retail priced at $21,500.00! I would love to sale my truck on the open market. However, it is difficult to sale vehicles of these prices in rural areas. If I were to set a fair price and put it up for sale, It may remain on the market for a year or more. I just don't know what to do. I guess I'll start shopping around and find some dealership that wants to do business. You would think Ford would give a trade offer that was reasonable, since it is their product. That shows how much they believe in what they are selling.

What it shows you is the weakness of the used car market on the whole right now, not how much the dealer "believe in what they are selling". The overall used car market is supersaturated right now, which is driving down values across the board.

WheelMA1 is right. More important is that the market is saturated with the jumbo vehicles cause all the moms in the country are dumping their supersized SUVs in favor os more fuel efficient vehicles (i.e.. mini vans).

Couple that with the HUGE incentives dealers are giving to push new jumbos (I saw Ford offering 12,000 off sticker last month) only drives the used market that much lower. Then you pile on things like GM lowering prices in general, the rice burners doing discounts for the first time ... it is all piling on the resale value

Finally, $3/gal will drive those that elect to drive these large machines out of the market. Those discretionary buyers drive up the prices up and keep the resale values high. The hottest market segment is the crossover segment for it allows some of the value of a large vehicle without the impact in terms of fuel and other cost.

I am rambling ... sorry

Does anyone think I would ever get a $20,000.00 trade offer?

KBB says $17,975.00 trade, $21,350.00 private, $24,835.00 retail

NADA says $21,025.00 trade, $24,275.00 retail

Edmunds says $18,460 trade, $19,899.00 private, $22,296.00 retail

No to 20k on trade. But you should be able to get that in a private party transaction.

25,000 miles in a couple of months, wow, that's some driving!

IMO, I'd wait as long as possible to trade that truck off, especially since it's only a few months old and try to drive it as little as possible. The de-value hit will be less painfull if you wait longer, and drive it much less.

During this time, I'd try to sell it outright, ad in the paper, sticker in the window, etc.

Since you know that the truck will be sold, I'd cancel the extended warranty and get that money back as it won't do you any good in terms of trade in value.

Here's a thought.

Instead of trying to get rid of your pickup.....going upside down, and losing money....think of the possibility of buying a smal, inexpensive sedan, and keeping your pickup.

That way you still have your pickup, to off-road, haul things (and not lose your youth )

But you also have a baby friendly grocery getter.

And your two payments would most likely match what you'd end up paying for a crew cab alone.

I'm not talking anything fancy, just some hyundai or kia....but enough room for a baby seat, and you and your lady.

Bear in mind....babies grow up really fast, before you know it, and when they're young, they just need a little back seat. We hauled our girl around in a fiesta (lived in the U.K.)....then in a camaro for a few years before we bought an Explorer when she was 4. Now she's 8 and we bought a Crew.....still have the camaro though, and loves riding in both....Faster Daddy....Turn the sub up Mommy!

Like I said, doesn't take long for them to be out of a car seat.....and your monthly vehicle bill will probably be the same with two, rather than just one expensive crew payment.

I too have rambled

superrangerman2002,

I made a mistake in my original post. I purchased the truck in November 2004.
I have had it a little over a year. I got it when the 2005's were first available.
