I've got a mess of PC parts in my shop, and I can't remember what is what. I know I've got some PCI Express Video cards and some standard AGP cards. But, the motherboard interface looks the same on all of them and the part numbers/names aren't helping. Ist here anyway to tell which one is PCI Express and which are AGP?
I may have mixed some parts yeterday resulting in that bad smell and non-working PC. I've reassembled the PC with a new procesor and motherboard using the on-baord graphics, and I'm afraid to try any of my video cards. BUt, I'd like to use the multi monitor or TV out if I can get them to work.
the AGP connector will be set farther back than a pci connector on the card
AGP and PCI express 16x are both set back. The PCI express will have the smaller connection section towards the rear of the case and the AGP will be the opposite. Look at some boards on newegg if you need a visual.

I think you're thinking of PCI jake00, they're talking about PCI Express which is a newer, faster version of PCI. I think the PCI express x16 on my board is black, all the AGPs i've seen are brown.

I know my main PC has PCI Express for video, and that I went thru at least one PCIE card before switching to the the card I'm running now. I thought it was mixed in with all my old AGP cards, and they all looked very similar. And they all fit into the same slots. Maybe, I misplaced the PCIE card.....
I actually tried to find some of the cards using the model and part numbers on the web, and it was inconclusive.

PCI 16x and AGP will not fit in the same slot. Here's the easiest way, measure the pin area. the AGP is about 68mm long and the PCI 16x is 85mm. Good luck.
Color of the slot is also not a good way to tell. Most board makers color the slots, PCI-E, PCI, and AGP to match the boards color theme. Example, I have 2 systems that are for gaming, both are DFI motherboards and both PCI-E. The NForce4 Utlra-D lanparty has all yellow slots, the DFI Infinity NForce4 board has black PCI-E slots and white PCI slots. I have a new DFI 915 intel board and all the slots are orange on it.
