starter 'spins'

Starter 'spins' with no engine cranking. Then, after random tries (so I could get home) it cranks.

Just replaced the starter two months ago with a Napa re-mfg. New battery. Good starting with the Petronix deal lately as well.

When it catches and cranks, starts right up.

This all happened from one day to the next. But then it happened three times today, worse each time.

I'm sure this has been posted before but I couldn't find what I needed. I have no problem pulling the starter out and replacing it, but I wanted advice on what problem to look for.

Also, if shims are needed, what exactly am I shimming and where should they go? (ie I've replaced the starter and seen shims in the store, but never shimmed the starter). Any other advice? Ground cable is good and clean, tight contacts.

You may have a bad place on the flywheel or starter.

Sounds like the starter Bendix is not engaging. Usually, 3 things can cause this:

1) Low battery. But you say your battery is fully charged..
2) Starter Bendix is not engaging due to broken spring, or it's binding on the shaft.
3) Bad tooth on flywheel. You say starts OK when it works, so probably # 2 is primary problem.

Take starter back where you bought it and have them test it completely. This probably won't show up on the test bench, (Murphy's Law) so get another starter.

[font color=red size=2]Make sure the starter bolts are tight. I've had the starter work loose and start to grind and spin. It's happened on my '73 390 twice and a '78 400 twice.

Just a thought.

thanks guys! the bushing came loose causing the...mini-gear wheel (is that the 'Bendix'?)...on the starter to move out of alignment with the flywheel.
Still under warranty, so first repair that didn't cost me dime.

Mike (still paying off the $124 bolt) D.
