> could have saved being shot maybe

This would have been the perfect place for a taser.

imo, As soon as police stop shooting at someone with a gun painted orange is when criminals will start painting their guns orange. Besides, a pellet gun is not a toy, it is a deadly weapon at close range. I would not want one shot into my skull, face, or eyes at close range.

As tragic as this is, the officer was 100% justified in shooting him.

I feel bad someone so young died, I feel worse for the officer that had to shoot him, at that close range he had to be splattered with the kid's blood.

As I was reading this thread, rebocardo was reading my mind. What does an officer do when people take real guns and paint the barrel orange? Put his gun down and say..OK put the toy away!! The bottom line is... he protects himself. As I learned in the Army..."When in doubt..DO IT!"

The first thing I even thought of was suicide by cop. Pretty common practice anymore. Kids and Dr Spock.... they never went together and never will. Kids need lessons, need to learn respect and self respect, need limits..( and truly expect them) and need to have the schools and feel good society we live in, back off and let them sample life in it's reality..like most of us older farts did.

There's truly, never a day goes by that I don't wonder how the human race has survived this many years, without the government protecting us from ourselves.

"This would have been the perfect place for a taser"

Actually not. With a taser you get one shot. If you miss you got nothing unless you go hand to hand. The cop percieved it as a real gun and was about to be shot. What if the cop missed? He would have been shot if it was a real gun. We only deal with perception on the road and prepare for it. In this case it was a shame, but there was no way to know.

Just for a little back ground. On the majority of police departments use of force charts, the taser comes before impact weapon or is the same as. If a kid was pulling out a gun on you would you grab a stick and swing at him? Or would you use a firearm.

I think the taser is one of the most misunderstood tools cops have. The other day I was on a call with a cop who had a guy that just stabbed somebody. The cop was the only one there at the time. The cop was standing approx. 10 feet away from the guy who was swinging the knife around. Of all the times I see the taser used, the shot with the taser is missed more than made. I took the guy down at gun point. If the guy had made a move at the cop and the cop missed with the taser, the cop would have been stabbed. He would not have had time to pull out a new cartridge and relaod. With the firearm he may have missed, but would have had 13 more shots to hit before being stabbed.

I also had read the boy painted the barrel black. I believe a person is looking for trouble if you do that.

Many good points have been brought up... I'd like to emphasize that these "airsoft" "guns" are incredibly popular and are flying off the shelves at your local walmart... One of my neighbors pointed a very real looking M4/M16 at me, they had removed the cheesy orange collar on the barrel. I had just returned from a day at the shooting range and thought it was the perfect time for a lesson for the little punk. I pretty much just took cover and proceeded to sneak right up on them and after some terse words, they all decided to put the collars back on the barrels and promised not to point a firearm, real or not at anyone. I knew they were too young to have an M16, and obviously had never been taught anything by their worthless parents. Interest in firearms is very high among youngsters, they just need to be taught the safety aspect. I'm not trying to put the duty on anyone else, but I devote two to four weeks a year to teaching Hunter Safety classes.
