hey, everybody, i have a 89 bronco 2 , 2.9 v-6 . i just bought this vehicle and ive done all my own work on it. it was running rich and smelled like gas, really bad. i finally figured out that it was the fuel pressure regulator, and know it runs like a rocket,... anyway it has manual trans, with auto 4x4. this is where my problem starts. every time i down shift and slow down, i here an awful chatter. i just cleaned the circit bord and prongs on the transfercase shift motor. to my amazement it whent into 4x4 when i touched the button, then i tried 4 low, the light came on . wow , letting out the clutch and nothing , like i was in nuetral. it shifts back into 4 hi , but wont disengage the 4x4 without shuting down the engine. could the shift motor wire mount make a difference? because the cap will turn 180' or maybe the manual trans fluid is low? please respond<<<\
hey thanks. i did put it in neutral, the light said low range , put it in gear , let the clutch out and nothing , like i was in nuetral. how can i check? pressure plate?
my 87 bronco II has this same setup manual trans, auto 4x4 the 4x4 will engage at any road speed and at a stand still ( best way to do it , i dont think enageing it while moving is the best way in terms of transfer case life) as for the 4x4 low you must be stoped ive engaged mine in 1st gear but it could have been any gear becuase you must have the clutch down or it will move and not engage i dont think the transmission has anything to do with the 4x4 problem at all most likley there may be somthing wrong with one of the sensor on the case to let the motor know when to stop it seems like its getting shut off b right in between 4x4 high and 4x4 low which would make the truck seem to be in nuetral as for the chatter it most likey be clutch chatter if you hav a new clutch it may do this until it gets broken in but i really dont know how a new clutch should act i do know you have to be easy on it till it gets seated properly sort of like braking in a new engine ive had this same sound with my quad i know its nothing to compare with a truck but it may be a loose universal joint and the tranny or rear end as it was in my quads case just take a quick look under your truck and see whats happening it my also be the rear end it slef i know mine had to gt replaced by the previous owner he might of had a simialar problem
