Does anyone know what I will need to do to make my speedo work in my 95 F-150 if i swap to a 9 inch rear axel. Its a stick so the shifting problem is not an issue.
Well this is great. I planned on doing the swap in March but if I can not have a speedo then there is no way I can do it because my truck will see a lot of road trips and high way driving. Much more on road then off.
If any one has any idea on a sollution or where I could find some good info on this problem at i wouild really apreciate it. Also i have heard that there is a Lincoln car called a versallies that had a 9 inch rear end with disc brakes so perhaps I should try to get one of those?
the Versailles was Lincoln's version of the ford Granada. it came with a 9 inch, and disc brakes . the Granada ess also had that setup. i forget who makes it, but if you check with a speed/hotrod shop, there is a vss that works off of a sensor mounted to the driveshaft. this might work for what you have in mind.
If I were to go to the trouble of the steerling I think I would just go with a Dana 70 rear. Id still have a half ton frame so it wouldnt really be worth it. Plus I dont want to go to the trouble of leaf springs on the front. I dont know what VSS means nor do I have any Idea how a speedo works. Any site with some info that you know of would be great I have found little info.
It's not THAT hard to rig something up. I just did a google search for "universal speed sensor" . Check this out from Summit. Might be able to work with that.

VSS stands for vehicle speed sensor. it is an electronic device that is used in place of a speedometer cable and gear setup to send an electric signal to the speedometer head in the dash
Ok that makes sense then and aparently the 9 inch is set up with the cable set up like I think of when I think of a speedo. So it really shouldnt be to hard to make something work in that case. I deffinitly will want to keep the factory speedo working not add an aftermarket.

Wont that axle be too narrow for a truck? I know that folks put them into jeeps and the WMS/WMS is fairly close to stock, IIRC.
I talked to some one today that said the VSS is located in the transmition. If that is the case how does the rear end I have make a difference.
if it IS in the tranny it wont make any difference....except for gearing, if you get a different ratio with your new axle it will make your speedo inaccurate...and i dont know how to correct a VSS device....

Go check... if there's a plug with a couple of wires coming out of the top of your 8.8 then the VSS is in the rear end (I'm betting it is).
BUT if it's coming out of the tranny then that would make it much easier to swap.
Also to recalibrate your speedo there's a wire that you have to find under the dash and ground and then when you turn on your key you can recalibrate the speedo using a certain formula that you can find on the internet if you search for it.
