My right head light has went out on my 2003 SD XL. This is the standard halogen head light. As I still have about a month of warrenty left, my first thought was just to have the dealer replace it.
Now I am considering replaceing both headlights with the Jewell-effect headlights that come with the XLT and the Lariat models.
I don't mind spending some to upgrade provided that the Jewelled lights does a better job illuminating as I plan on keeping this truck for a long time.
I seriously doubt that your headlight will be covered under warranty. Replacements are only $10-$15, so I wouldn't even bother trying warranty.
The 'aero' headlights on the XLTs & such are pretty, but I'm not sure about any increase in functionality. Especially not for the cost of the upgrade. But, it's your money, so you'll have to decide that.
I've been looking at various sealed-beam conversion kits. They run as cheap as $40 and there are a various choices in bulbs with different brightnesses.
Fred my buddy switched from the sealed beam to the jewel effect headlights on his '02 (well he wrecked it and we fixed so he had extra money to play with) and we found that ford just uses a pigtail adapter for the sealed beams so if follow the wiring back about 8" you should find the correct end to plug in to the the new style bulbs. I can only say it was that way in '02 but it's worth a look it sure beats splicing new ends on
There is a guy on here that converted the 05 to the jewel effect headlights. I asked about the part numbers and price required, but never got a response. Maybe if he reads this he will respond to you with his experience.

My '02 F-350 has the aeros and though I haven't had an opportunity to compare them, I can say one thing with certainty. They have the best pattern and provide better visibility than the stock headlights in any other pickup I've owned. Something I've noticed when loaded/pulling my car hauler....I have yet to be flashed by oncoming vehicles because of their brightness under front end lift.
Although I'm happy with them, I've been thinking about SilverStar replacements. I dodge deer every morning and evening on my trips to and from work.
Thanks for your comments. After I posted this I found out that I was not alone with being dissatified with the factory lights.
The Sylvania Silverstars seem to have a following and I have a Advance Auto Store near by.
Supid ?- Do you just change the bulb from the back of the houseing, this should be simple? or are changeing out the whole headlight assemble. Sorry to ask this, the last headlights I replaced was on a 87 Crown Vic and a 87 Dodge pickup.
For replacing the bulb, I assume that this is just a twist out and un-plug?
I asked a guy who posted on the stock radio poll to post or PM info on the SilverStars. I went to the Sylvania site and they're 9007 bulbs which supposedly just plug up to the aero housings. I'd like to hear from someone who's changed them out before I dig any farther.
I must be in the minority. I have been disappointed in the jeweled headlights in my 03. The light pattern just doesn't seem to illuminate the road. High beam is no help. My wife's 02 Volvo XC illuminates better on low beam than my 4X4 SD does on high beam. Even had the alignment checked, but it didn't make any difference. They look nice but that's all. JMO
Fred, are your XL headlights like these?
If so, then you can't use any of the bulbs listed by XLT owners. Our lights are significantly different than theirs. There is no twist-out bulb. The entire headlight gets replaced... just like thy did in 1972.
