Not sure if this is the right forum/thread line to post this on...but, I have a 79 F250 Super Duty w/ 2 flat tires, no bed, no floor boards, a solid 351M, and a fried starter motor that was improperly installed that we can't figure out hot to get out (the bolt is stripped and rusted -- pointers???). I gave $150 for her and drove her home (got it started then, and stopped at every airhose to reinflate the tires). I later I bought my baby (Millie) a lifted 77 F150 Ranger, with dual exhaust C6 headers, 400M w/ a rod knock (probably needs a rear main seal, hard to say til I get the exhaust leak fixed and can hear the engine clearly). Would it be worth it to pull the 351 and drop her in the 77, service the 400 and then swap back? The 77 is my Baby , as I said, but she's also a work truck (hauling dead trees out of the woods, and such, as well as my daughter's favourite "the roads are slippery today LET'S GO FOR A RIDE MAMA!!!!" school's snowed-out pastime. Suggestions?
I would suggest taking a long look at the real main in the 351M, they all leak, it seems to be bad crank shaft. Mine (FiFi) is due for a new one.
It certainly would be a good solution to keep your baby on the road while getting the 400 the way you want it!
If you want the 351M for any length of time I would put a new manifold and carb on it while doing the transfer. I went from 9MPG to 14MPG by doing this! (Edelbrock high rise mani and 600CFM 4bbl carb). With a 50% increase in MPG it didn't take long to pay for itself.
You really went from 9mpg to 14mpg.That almost sounds too good to be true. How much did that setup run you.

$600 Obviously I did everything at the same time, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. My quess is that I could have gotten 10-11MPG with the old set up if it was all okay but that carb was a mess. Also I didn't do this for performance, the new 4bbl is not a high performance carb. But I use this truck as a utility/hunting vehecle.
