i've come into a pair of heads, but i think they're not a matched pair....
they're both c8ae-h heads, but there's a two digit number between the exhaust ports on the right hand side of each one that differs, one is '69', one is '75'.....
any ideas what that code could be? volume for the chamber, or production year code of some kind? thanks in advance...
they seem to be identical other than that, the valves seem to be the same size, etc...one is much cleaner than the other, but that's probably because they were stored on pallets along with heads from everything from al nissan 4cyl to iron cat diesels...
i can rebuild them myself, i'm in class for automotive tech, so i have unlimited access to equipment for it. the hard part is finding parts, or more specifically money for the parts...
how are the valve seats at holding up to unleaded fuel?
i was given a 390 block and crank from the school, no one wanted it. haven't really had time to check it out yet, but would like to rebuild it to either a mildly modified 390 or a 410 (with a 428 crank, if im not mistaken) to put in a rebuild of a '59 fairlane i found under a barn...
these heads were part of the deal, but i had to find them seperately. one has been recently refurbished, seats and valves reground and cleaned up anyway. i didn't really look at those. regardless, it'll be some time before any of this goes down, i'm just trying to be prepared.
was there a single valve size for these, or did it vary depending on whether they were originally on a 390, 427, etc?
The head date codes are between the center two valve springs. Look for a number/letter/number(s) sequence. The date codes will tell the exact timeframe. Post the numbers and also if the first number has 2 dots under it. Thr 2 dots will mean it's a 69 or later casting. Date codes also can be in the area of the casting number but I'm pretty sure the C8-H heads have em between the springs. Most FE heads have std size valves. The 427's and the 428 CJ heads have larger valves.
as mentioned, its best to get hardened seat inserts for the exhaust. The valves are standard 2.02-2.03 intake and 1.55-1.56 exhaust. My d2te have something like 203 stamped in them or my old ones, i can't remember but imo the number is worthless. The important numbers are the casting and date code.
