Just recently, I went from my trusty 94 turbo non PS F 350 which never even missed a beat to a early 99 f 350 crew Larriat with 160 000 Km on it. It went through a trans rebuild with the previous owner at 107k, new stock converter and the usual soft parts. Now i get it and it seems fine with no weight behind it for two weeks, shifts fine no slippage. Then i put the 22' boat behind her and all heak breaks loose. It started by slipping after the shift into second gear? I pulled over checked the level and it was all good and clean looking. So on i go with no other noticable slippage. Then on the way home later that day it seemed to shift fine with no slippage and then the o.d light started blinking the trouble code flash. SO i took her in and had the tranny devils pull the pan and check it out what codes came up. The codes are incorrect gear ratio in second and a shift error code. Im not sure of the code numbers. The pan had the usual fuzz around the magnet and the mercon looked ok but in need of a change. The filter had about 3 salt grain sized metal flakes on it and was quite dirty looking. Could these codes be from the dirty filter not allowing enough fluid through??? Now im being told they need to pull the trans to see whats up???It is noticably smoother shifting and seems to be shifting at a lower rpm since the filter and fluid change. Now what will it do when the boat is back on??? I am a bit miffed to be let down with such a nice truck with all the power i need in stock form other than the filter and ccv mods. How can a superduty need two rebuilds in less than 160 000 kilometers with such light use??? Im begining to miss my pre powerstroke gear crusher zf. Sorry for the book.

sorry to hear of your troubles... i understand that lots of the "stock" parts like the t/c are "soft"... upgrades to the tranny are very important, especially if you are going to tow any sizeable loads... there are a few alternatives to replacing a stock tranny with another stock tranny.... the monster box comes to mind, and there are others... and the stock t/c is one of the weakest links in the drivetrain, jmo of course, but i doubt many on here would argue... i'm sorry if that info is a dissapointment for you, other than your tranny you have a great mule... and if you think it has power in the stock configuration, you do not have ANY idea of the true POWER these engines have...!
Did they replace your transmission cooler when they rebuilt the tranny? If not, it's possible you got some derbis from the old transmission failing in your new one, which could be really bad news.
Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I took the truck for a spin tonight after the new filter and fluid and it seems to shift at a lower rpm and also shift smoother and pull harder with less throttle. I also forgot to mention that when i backed my boat up the driveway on thursday, i noticed a few spots of mercon in the driveway. I couldn't see where it came from upon visual inspection??? I hear from other threads it could be from the flywheel inspection hole ? Again i am not familiar with this automatic thing. So as far as previous trans work, i am only speculating from what i know by calling the shop it was rebuilt at to give them a work order # from the recipt to see what was done at 107 000 km to see if it's a stock converter. the synopsis was yes, new stock converter and clutches and the regualar soft parts as he caled it??? So as i stand now, I have had the codes cleared and the fluid and filter changed and it appears to be much better. Now i will give it the test to see if my new black beauty will haul my charter boat up the hill as my old girl did for years. Or maybe i'll need to build the crap outta it so it won't dissapoint me again. All in all i love the truck, I am just a tad sad to see such quality let down by a insufficient trans in stock config. behind a amazing powerplant. Thanks again, This site is great.
Get a Trans-go Tugger kit or a Factory Tech valve body and the biggest cooler that you can find.
I know a lot of people run with the Sonnax, but I feel that the other two are a more complete upgrade. They also cost three times as much as the Sonnax.
Well now after only 60 k on a complete rebuild, it appears as though it's due for another. This really drives me nuts to no end. The price i have been quoted from various trans shops is from 3200-5200 $ Canadian for a upgraded trans. so now im thinking of flogging my new found love turned depression for a gear crusher or a chevy...What else can i do being in canada with no real aftermarket rebuild guys? They are all telling me a diffrent storey. After talking to the stealership, I felt like id been molested?????
There are performance transmision places in canada. BD power for one. I am not sure where you are but you could also have a transmission shipped to a tranny shop just south of the border and have it installed there. Talk to BTS, suncoast or Factory Tech and I am sure they could point you in the right direction.
Thanks for the info guys, that monster box looks like it would hold up nice! I did some continued research and have found the smaller trans shops seem to be more up front with me. They have had some good suggestions about aftermarket upgrades that will meet my boat towing on occasion with a 9 foot camper. Now i just need to figure out what to put in it??? Lots of good info out there. Thanks
Well it happened, Believe it or not on my way to get the Trans looked at and a price quote it went Kaboom. Shifted nice and smoothe the whole way into town. Stopped at a light 4 blocks from the trans shop and gave her some juice at the green, hit about 30 miles and hour and Bang. Nothing,Coasted into a gas station and called for the Hook for the remaing four blocks to the shop. Price Quote with 1500$ Billet multidisk converter, and complete rebuild $4450 canadian. So now im without a truck for a week. I went over five years in my 94 f350 without even missing a beat. Ford disgusts me right now as i listen to all my Duromax buddies snicker and say i told ya so.
