shifts from first to second but then shifts to third with nothing there. There is no slippage or trying to pull. There is no sign of breakage, there is no metal or dirt in the pan. Fluid and reverse are fine. Any ideas!!
Is this something that just happened suddenly, or has it been coming on for a while? There a many passages, valves, springs, pistons, gaskets, seals, etc that could have failed, plugged, or leak, and would cause something like your problem. Before tearing into the xmsn, why don't you flush the system (about 8 qts), change the filter, and add a can of Sea Foam to it and drive it for a while. If that doesn't work, you probably have a mechanical failure, and the xmsn will need to be opened up. Try the easy stuff first and keep us posted.

I agree. A broken band will leave nothing in the pan that would indicate malfunction. While on a totally different vehicle (71 Ford Torino, C4 or C6), the 2nd gear band broke and it shifted from 1st to 3rd. $120 and a day later, I was back on the road with a hard hitting 2nd gear.
