Unhappy Power Steering fluid overflowed

Well, came home this evening & walked out the garage door and thought I saw fluid below the X. Closer look... yep. Grabbed the flashlight and looked under, it's dripped down from the the steering box. I then pop the hood, and look down. The power steering pump has fluid in the lid and it looks like its run down from there. The top of the steering box is dry, and for that matter, the power steering fluid is below the low mark.

I'm gonna refill the fluid tonight, but I'm not sure where to go from there aside from keeping an eye on it. Searches in the SD & Diesel forums turn up that because the PSD doesn't provide engine vaccum, the power brakes use the hydraulics from the powersteering to power the brake assist. So thats another lead to follow...

Anyone have any ideas?

You didn't happen to turn the wheel with the engine off did you? That will cause fluid to leak.

Not that I can recall. I'm pretty sure I pulled in 2 days ago, pulled my coat out of the back, and locked the doors. It looks like its the same to me.. I'll ask the wife if she did anything to it.

No, I do my own maintenance. Can't stand the thought of paying someone to do something I can do myself (most of the time... I draw the line at painting).

NewXer,

Did you find the problem with your leak? I am having the same problem. My truck started to make a whining sound a few months ago. Checked the fluid level and it was low. I put some Lucus power steering fluid additive in. That got rid of the whining. Now, a few months later I am seeing drips on my driveway. When I looked under the truck I saw that the dripping was coming off the power steering box (similar to what you are finding). I thought at first, I had overfilled the reservoir. I sprayed degreaser on the steering box to clean everything up. Checked for leaks a week later and there is definitely a leak somewhere. Let me know what you found on your truck.

Nothing else thus far, not a single drip anywhere on the power steering system that I can find. I'm going to replace the ball joints & tie rod ends either this week or next week. If it still sounds sick, I'll replace the power steering pump just to be safe.
