I have a quick qusetion. Because the only difference between the two is that the detroit unlocks the outside in a trun to rotate faster than the inside, if coasting, wouldn't the tire wear be real similar to a full spool. I have ran a lincoln locked rear forabout 6 months and the driving quirks, for me, were real livable. If the detroit can significantly improve tire wear I think I'll get one, if not I'm shopping for a spool.

Spool or lincoln locker really have no bussiness on the street. Vehicles have diffs for a reason. A detroit would be a far better choice than a spool for street use and while it will still have some quirks on the street, they will be a lot more managable than a spool. Spool's will increase your turning radius too on and off the road.
Well I ran a welded rear on the street for about 6 months before the weld on one of the side gears let go (I'm a horrible welder). As for driving I could barely tell that she was locked except in realy tight turns. My rig has a wheel base of about 102" so that helps. I had to run 1350 u-joints cause anything smaller I would tear out in about a month, I have a heavy foot. The tread on the rear tires was scrubb off in short order. For a daily driver I wouldn't weld the rear or spool it, but for a second vehicle or mudd truck I would.
P.S. My Q was, would a detroit wear out tires faster than a spool, NOT weither one should run locked or unlocked, I have done it, but not with a detroit locker.
the tire wear will be the same....the way i drive its rare i can make a turn without at least getting on the gas in the middle of it....most of the time the detroit is locked around corners for me....the only i difference i can tell on teh street in my lwb truck between the detroit and spool is making very tight turns
i think the tire wear will be about the same, but i would give the spool a 10% more than a detroit
definetly put in a locker. your tires will wear out twice as fast with a spool and then you run the risk of breaking other things like u joint, axels, and it put more sress on the pinion and trans
If the detroit rarely unlocks there can't be much difference in the way it handles compared to a spool. If the locker stays locked than it will wear the tires the same as a spool. I'm trying to justify a detroit over a spool, but it seems that from the guys who have had one, they arent much different than a spool. Decisions decisions. Thanx guys.
P.S. I've ran a lincoln locker in the rear so I know about the extra strain on the drivetrain, but if the detroit spends most of its time locked than there isn't any less strain than a spool. JustMy2Cents.
