Hubs

Anyone have any experience with Detroit Axle hubs good bad or indifferent.

I run 315 x 75 R16 tires which seem to play havoc with the hubs

there seems to be a multitude of alternatives

I need 2004 Front HUB for 4WD 4 wheel ABS Single rear Wheel Not sure about coarse or fine thread studs

Motorcraft from Auto Nation at $321

rock auto has
Motorcraft $268
Moog $176.79
SKF $245
Timken $165

Detroit Axle has theirs $98

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to avoid or what to go for.

As usual all input greatly appreciated

Sorry I can't say much about the Detroit Axle hubs.

I can say they are a hub/bearing unit, and not too many have problems with them. They are different from 2005+ just an FWI.

I put Timken units on my dads 3/4 ton Suburban and they seem to be holding up well.

Those prices do seem about right.

I usually go with OEM parts for this truck but have rolled the dice and ordered the Detroit Axle unit.

At $75 to the door figure I will be ahead of the game if I end up having to replace it a couple of times down the road with the dealer parts counter price being around $500.

I just don't understand the huge price discrepancy.

This was a pretty easy job to do. You do need a good pair of snap rings to though. The hub came promptly from detroit axle and at a great price (compared ti many of the other alternatives).

Now we just have to see how long it lasts for. If I have problems I will try to repost.

Thanks for the input

Mine is doing fine, just bought another for a spare, price was down to $65. This one came with a Moog part number 515056 etched in the face.

Next time you can save a few bucks and just order the needle bearing. Part numbers in link below.

There are 2 big roller bearings inside that you can't replace without destroying the hub, that's why you replace the whole hub. The needle bearing only supports the axle.

To be honest not a great experience. Hub lasted about 7,500 miles before it was noisy and had excessive play in it. Called Detroit axle and they sent me a replacement for $75 and told me to send in the failed part.
Sent that in at my expense and their response was there was no manufacturing defect and it must have been installed incorrectly despite my telling them that it was indeed torqued correctly.

The replacement has been on for about 10,000 miles. It sounds fine but I have not jacked truck up to check for play yet which I need to do

Ultimately a poor hub produced by a company that does not stand behind its product, but let's see how the second one does. If that fails I would not go to the trouble of replacing the part with one of theirs only to be told it has no manufacturers defect.

That sucks, they are on ebay now for $65.55. I'd like to hear their explanation of installation error, it's 4 nuts on studs. I put a few pumps of grease through the ABS pickup hole just to be safe.

I replaced the needle bearing in mine which was spun and greased it up. No issues. I know what you mean about the uni-bearing though.
