I recently had my clutch, slave, clutch master cyl, and oil change done. It was all internal in the tranny so it had to be dropped(of course the oil change wasn't). Does $880 sound right for all the parts and labor? He picked it up and dropped it off also.
It's not a good deal but whey you're paying someone $70-80 an hour labor then it doesn't take long to add up. You probably put on $2-300 worth of parts and another $500 for labor is probably about right. But it isn't a good deal. It's the going rate which is the highest you would pay.
well, put it this way. it's not WAY out of line from what it should cost. if anything, i would argue that it's a little on the low side. NOT the deal of the century, but you didn't get screwed. of course, this is assuming he used decent quality parts.
Yep, wench got a fair deal. It's the going rate. He asked if he was getting a good deal. If by good he meant "fair and didn't get ripped off" then the answer is "yes, you didn't get ripped off." If by good he meant "did I get something better than the going rate" then the answer is no. I guess it's a matter of point of view. My spending motto has always been "never pay retail." So a good deal to me is one where I pay less than retail, like the time I bought a $75 Mac ratchet for 25 cents and a $250 Snap On Impact gun for $50 in a pawn shop. Those are good deals. If I pay retail then I haven't gotten a "good" deal, I've gotten the same deal anyone can get. That was where I was coming from. And I doubt anyone can ever get a "good" (in my point of view) deal from a mechanic. I do most my vehicle repairs but there are times when I can't and in those times I'll pay. But I don't figure it to be a good deal. But I do have a good mechanic so it doesn't hurt too much.
On the other hand, knowing that there are a lot of unscrupulous mechanics out there who would quickly try to empty your pockets then maybe getting a fair deal is like getting a good deal.
