Tiie-Rod End Question?
Really need some help here. I'm trying to track down a popping noise in my wife's '97 astro van steering. It almost always happens when I take off from a stop. It is usully louder when I am turning right, and the "POP" is almost certainly comming from the right side of the vehicle... I just pulled the tie-rod assembly to inspect it... When I rotate the ball stud on the outer tierod, it seems pretty smooth...The inner one is very diffrent..Almost as if it has de-tents. Not really rough but kinda like a really big toggle switch. I was pretty sure this was the problem until I pulled the other tie-rod assembly and discovered almost the same situation.My question is, Should these inner tie-rod ends be as smooth to rotate as the outer, or are they suppose to be like a giant toggle switch's? Put another way,What does a wore out tie-rod end act like?...Certainly appreciate any thoughts or ideas.
