It'd be nice if some Execs at Ford or GM would read this thread. For all the hoopla about what's wrong with their companies, and how to fix them, they've pretty much ignored a major one- the point of sale...
Amen. How do people come to be car salesmen? 1) They were born into it, and they'll inherit the family dealership. 2) They've run out of legitimate means of support, and this is their last hope before arrest and/ or deportation. 3) A very few people (two of them right here on FTE) made the crazy decision to make this business their CAREER. And therein lies the problem: this is not a career for most people. Other than myself, who, when asked at the age of 14 what they wanted to do for a living, replied "car salesman?" (The high school guidance counselor that asked me that question choked on his coffee after my response, and immediately signed me up for intensive psycho-therapy...) Ernie and I are lucky enough to work at dealers that take the important stuff a little more seriously than most operations.
You show me a good, long-time car guy, and I'll bet you lunch there's a late-model trade that he/she snagged for a song hidden away in the garage...
'96 Town Car Signature Touring Edition, low miles, Crown Vic trade-in, looks and drives like new, just sitting under a cover in my garage, waiting for spring. Sweeeeeeet........
What's the solution? Pretty simple, really- find a good store and stick with them.
Of course, at this point here only TWO good stores. One in Oregon, the other in New York. AND DON'T YOU GUYS FORGET IT!!
When I went to buy My truck I opened the local paper and saw an add for a 2000 F250 CC "Well Equided" It said. Well it was Sunday morning and although I was suppose to be off I was stuck waiting for our parts manager to come in so i could finish up a car. (I work at an Import Dealership) So I phone on this add because I can hardly belive that the truck is only 14,999. with only 40000miles. I get the sales guys name and say i'll be in latter if my parts manager doesn't show up, which he unfortunatly did a half hour latter. But I went to take a look at the truck the next day. When I got to the dealership i asked for the sales guy I had to talked to on the phone the day befor, he wasn't in. So I talked to another guy, I told him about the truck. He said he wasn't sure what i was talking about and if i had the newspapper add, which i did. then he talks to the sales manager and wa politly told that the truck was "sold yesterday" I was like okay whatever too bad but it happens right? Then I was told that they had another f250CC that i could have for the same price. Well I had to take a look at it. OUCH!!! It had two vinle bench seat, NO options... I mean NONE. I took one look at the sales guy and said stop wasting my time. We have enough sales guys go through our dealership that I don't even bother learning thier names, there is no point they are all the typical "sleazy" used car salesmen type. If you want anything acomplished go straight to the sales manager because lets be honest, he's the one that can cut the deals. So thats what i did, martched back up into the sales office talked to the Sales manager, Got the little (or big) Gem that i'm driving now! A 2002 F350 XLT SC! Ha ha! who says you gotta haul anything! I use mine as a daily driver and the V10 badging scares off the honda guys next door!
I should probably add that I paid 22,500 for my truck and it only has 78,000 kilometers on it! That was fighting them down from 31,999. LOL!
