The coffee can

I have a 77 F150 with a 400. What is the purpose of the coffee
can located right beside the battery? It seems to be hollow inside.

Does your truck have a/c? I had an old Granada that had auto climate control and there was a vacuum reservoir (more like an apple juice can)that maintained vacuum to the control head. Could this be your coffee can? You didn't indicate what if any lines were coming from the can.
Got my curiousity up...

The coffee can

Its a vacuum-assist chamber for the brakes.

No air conditioning. There are 2 vacuum lines going to this can.
Your right, it looks more like a juice can.

Thanks

these are usually fuel vapor vacum chambers. If one of the lines goes from the can back to the fuel tank it is used to suck fuel vapor into the carb to be burned. The can is to be sure fuel splash that gets sucked down the tube will evaporate in the can and not flood the carb or intake with fuel. Can you tell where both of the vacum lines go? This will give a better idea of what this vacum chamber is used for in your truck.

It's the Charcoal Canister - pop the top off and you can see the charcoal that lost it's ability to filter fuel vapors years ago. I re-located mine back to the rear of the truck to show off more of my engine chrome. The cannister uses the same crystaline charcoal your fish tank uses....

Seems there's two definitions floating around. There is indeed a charcoal canister but early trucks with power brakes had vacuum canisters between the power booster and the manifold.

On my '76 F-150 there looked like there was a large pork and beans can or something, which was the charcoal canister. Part of the smog crap...

Jim
I would have to agree with Ken that this is a booster for the braking system. I thought about the charcoal cannister when I replied before but with only two lines coming off of it and the juice can shape this is unlikely. The charcoal cannister in my 78 (can't be much different than your 77) has three lines and is a plastic container that in no way resembles a juice can.
A thought...if your as lucky as me your local library may have the factory manuals for your truck. The main branch here in Halifax has the complete 5 volume set for my old truck. They are invaluable for sorting out odd questions like this. So try your local library, you never know.

OK guys, I've seen one on a 74 F-250, but my 79 and 86 don't have them. However, a friend's 96 F-150 has one too. I can't remember what was coming out of it, but the truck did have a separate charcoal canister. The only pattern I've seen is the one's with them (the cans) have air conditioning, so it might have something to do with that?

Does your battery set on the passenger side up front? Mine used to have a "gallon juice can" black in color under my battery. It was the "charcoal canister" I think. Several small lines to carb and tank.
I have no vacuum reservoir for the brake booster (straight hose from the intake manifold) but do have a small ball vacuum reservoir that will move the heater door motors after the engine is off if you change the control settings.
If you had the canister it would be long passed working anyway but pay attention to the lines that might be disconnected. One goes to the tank!

Good to see the flag!

I'd like to revive this thread. My "coffee can" has 3 tubes coming off it, no hoses. The smog guy says it needs to be hooked up,very important! The mechanic I use says it is a vacum resevoir for the air conditioner. I guess I'll have it hooked up anyway so I can pass my smog test. I would really like to know for sure exactly WHAT this can is for.
