Distributor vaccum advance

Hey guys,

I recently converted my 1984 f150 300I6 with a carburated computer (EEC-IV) to simple duraspark system. On the distributor, there are two vaccum holes: One laying down on the end and the other upward near the top. A guy at the garage told me to use a variable vaccum source for the one at the end and to leave the other one open. The truck runs good (usually) but it doesn't have the power it used to.

Sometimes though, the truck runs like ****! I can't explain it! The idle drops down, it fluctuates and even stalls sometimes. It's been doing that for a while now and everything is new on it(plugs, wires, cap, rotor, carb, dist, electrical, etc...) EVERYTHING!!!!

I was thinking that the vaccum advance gets stuck on the distributor sometimes so the timing lowers down and causes the idle to drop and run like old hell!

What do you guys think about all that,

Should I use a constant vaccum source on that top hole on the distributor???
Am I doing anything else wrong??

Thanks in advance

I wound up putting a Duraspark II distributor in mine with a single vacume input advance I set the base timing(no vacume hooked up) at 10 degrees and then applied live manifold vacume all the time runs great gets good mileage for a 300 six.

Check the one barrel carb base for leaks. My old Goat 85 with the feedback carb would run like a top then just suddenly die at idle. Tracked ot down to the base of the carb. bolts go through each way and were loose. 210,00m miles this happened at.

Took it all apart and did a rebuild on the carb. ran it till 292k when the pistions finally became so loose that i had no compression.

another place to look.

Does Duraspart require carb switch?

I am considering the Duraspark II in my 84 F250 also. I found the distributor, but wondered if you went with an earlier carb at the same time, or what other mods were needed. This must be old hat to you experienced users, so a link or a point in the right direction would sure be appreciated. Thanks! JimG

The carb unless it is totally wore out will not be effected by removing the computer. It will actually idle better without the feed back solenoid working You will have to manually set the idle since it is computer controlled but the adjusting screws are there. THat is what I did for about a year before I put the Offey intake and a two barrel Ford carb on it with EFI split exhaust manifolds.

That's true.
You can buy, for that year a carb with no feedback but in my experience, it is a little smaller than the feedback.

Anyway, when I took my feedback carb out and put the new one in, I lost a lot of power. You should defenitly consider Duraspark though, it's trouble-free once you get it right. Be prepared to do some serious wiring changes, get a book!!
