Adjustable Valves

I have read a few threads about installing adjustable rockers on the FE but I still don't know the best way! Which direction should be taken to avoid the oil flooding mentioned. Thanks,Gene

Not sure the problem you are mentioning? I have both stock adj's and Dove HD units and I don't have any issues. The stock units are on my '69 F100 428 and I haven't touched them in years!!!!!!!! Granted it doesn't get alot of summer miles, but still don't lose any sleep over them.

Oil control is not related to rocker type, at least as I could ever figure out why.

The best way to avoid oil flooding in the top end, is to use new rocker shafts and new rockers. Make sure the plugs are in the end of the rocker shafts. Sticking Holley jets in the heads is more of a band-aid.

The adjustables or the non-adjustables can leak just as much if they're worn out.

I guess my problem is not knowing what has adjustable and what doesn't. I was under the empression most FE's were non-adjustable! I might be able to aquire a 390 or 428 and was wondering what might be involved in equipping them with adjustable ones.

You need the adjustable rocker arms and a set of ball/cup style pushrods. You can use the oem aluminum rocker stands and slot them for a little better clamping pressure. Take a good look at the rocker shafts and replace if worn. Also the aluminum spacers that replace the rocker shaft springs are a nice upgrade but the original springs are fine on a stock to mild build. If your planning more look into hardened shafts and better stands. All solid lift cam engines cam with adjustable rockers from the factory. Hyd cam engines came non adjustables.

The holes on the shaft (one for each rocker) need to point down toward the head to keep the rockers happy and avoid excessive oil flow past the rockers.
