Question 2001 and newer Brake problems

I have a 2002 and have had some brake troubles. My brother has a 2002 and also had some problems. I have seen a couple of posts about other brake problems on 02,03,04 rangers. So Lets hear from anyone with newer rangers that have had brake problems.

G_k50 said he had a $500.00 problem. As I said, we have had Problems with rotors and pads on two 02's. I was just wondering if they are blips or is there more out there we haven't heard of.

Well lets see if I can be more specific. My Ranger at 50,00k miles needed to have the rotors turned. Then at 55,000 miles it had to have them turned again and new pads installed. Then at 61,000 miles I put new rotors and pads on.

My last Ranger went 110,000 miles and never had the brakes touched when I traded it off.

My brothers 02 had the rotors/pads replaced at 22,000 miles by Ford and when I checked them this week at 71,000 miles, It needed the rotors turned and I put new Ford pads on it.

Specific enought?

thats better! sounds like the first round of brakes on your brothers ranger were a factory issue and the second, normal wear. at 50k when you had your rotors cut did you change the pads? if not then that is why you had to have them cut at 55k. our rotors can only be cut twice from the factory so at 61k you had to change both because the rotors may have been out-of-round and the rotors were due. not everybody can cut rotors and they will screw them up in turn recking your pads. by the way what makes you think you need to do all of this, was the sensor rubbing or were you getting a grinding noise? i don't think we're trying to pick on you, we're really just trying to help! why don't you give us as much info about your problem as you can? maybe the above will put you in the right direction. personally i hate messing with brakes especially drums!

One other thing to consider with warped rotors is uneven torque. Uneven lug nut torque on the front wheels can cause the rotors to warp. Also never torque the first lug directly to 100 FTLBS and then the others. Always ramp them up in a few increments. I have a 2003 with 32,000 miles and the pads and rotors are fine. Since I now only drive it on the weekends, I hope the brakes last for a few more years. But brakes don't last forever and when they're cooked they need to be replaced, no two ways about it.

Whenever I have rotors turned I always change pads and visa versa. As far as the reason for doing the work, it has always been because of pulsing in the pedel and shaking in the steering wheel.

Before we get side tracked with my problems the reason for this thread is to try to identify anyone else having trouble with late model Ranger brakes.

Here is a link to another case of early problems with some very good info on brake rotor "warping" and pad wear.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=442218

So, Anyone else having early problems with their 01,02,03,04,05 ranger brakes?

Thanks for the input.
Dave

My 03 has NEVER stopped well, since the day it was bought. At 10,000 mi the rotors were cracked. Pads/ rotors replaced by the dealer. At 30,000, the right rotor disintegrated when I hit the brakes. Thank God the intersection was clear when I blew through it. Dealer replaced rotors/pads again. 10 months later it failed inspection because of cracked rotors. Again, dealer replaced pads/ rotors. The truck could barely stop itself now. After 8 months, and MULTIPLE trips to the dealer, I gave up and took it to another shop. Found out the dealer put the wrong rotors (too small) on the truck. So now, I have no choice but to argue with the dealer about putting the right rotors on. I eventually had to call Ford Corporate Headquarters to get my truck fixed. 2 months later it was fixed. At 60,000 I hear a clunking noise in the front when I hit the brakes. Guess what, broken rotors. I called Ford Corporate Headquarters again, explained the situation, faxed them the maintence records, and basically told them where they could put this Ranger. They had my truck shipped to someplace in MD for testing/ repair. 1 month later, I get my truck back with a totally new braking system...from the master cylinder to the drums & rotors. Now at 72,000, so far so good. The truck stops like it did new (which still doesn't impress me), so now I'm going to upgrade the shoes and pads. Hopefully, this will help its stopping power.

I've had Fords all my life. Never have I had any brake problems. Even my 94 stopped 500% better than my 03.

I have a 2002 XLT, the rotors haved warped in the past but now that i torque them myself and then re torque them after about 50 miles everytime the wheels are off i dont seem to have a problem anymore. I had another problem as well. I put on semi-metallic pads from Raybestos and they were terrible. The brakes growled and squeeled like a wild boar getting corn holed. I put on Some greenstuff pads from EBC and they are the best pads in the world as far as i'm concerned. No noise, No Fade, the truck stops like a Ferrari and no rotor problems.
