'66 F100, already had the front disc conversion, but still has the original master cylinder. WOuld like to upgrade it. I seem to recall someone mentioned an article or somethign on this site about upgrading these old master cylinders. I've tried checking teh articles adn also doing a search, but can't find it.
I've probably looked right over it......kind of like looking all over the garage for that wrench you need......and then discovering it is in your back pocket!!!
Can anyone tell me if there is such a article and where it is??
Does have front discs, they do work, and I only assummed this was the original mc, as it is virtually identical to the one on you '63 falcon.
???
The drum brake MC has a check valve in the outlet to maintain a small amount of pressure in the wheel cylinders to prevent air seeping into the WC. That could cause heavy wear on the disc pads since there are no springs to retract the pads from the disc rotor. I also noticed a compression fitting on the brake line, I am not positive, but I think that is illegal, all brake lines must be double flared.
It is possible that the MC was replaced by a disc brake unit, the Mustang used a disc MC that looks like the pictured unit. I must admit to not understanding how they handled the rear drum check valve, however. Usually a disc/drum system used a metering/proportioning valve to keep pressures routed correctly front/rear.
I transplanted all the front end components from a '76 onto my '65. Seems to me that all I did was bolt it up and retube the brake lines. I replaced the MC with a rebuilt model and simply put- tha tha tha that's all folks. If I were you I would seriously consider upgrading asap. It's worth noting that there is an external proportioning valve with integral differential pressure switch that needs to be installed as well. If you get this stuff from a donor, be sure and get this thingy. BTW nice job on the 302

Reason: added info
PUTT...I've never was shure how the Mustang disc/drum worked either, I have a 66 with non power disc/drum, unless the check valve is in the porpotioning valve..I just recently changed it to a 67 dual master, just bolted it on, rerouted the lines and it works???
CHARLIEHORSE..you realy need to make some new brakelines..those look dangerous at best
WHy do you think I was looking to upgrade? I agree about the brakes/lines and that is why I wanted to upgrade and fix everything at once. Was just trying to find out the info I needed about such things as what year/model master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc, I needed to do the job. GOing to a parts store is of no help at all, as they just want to look up the '66 and sell you a direct replacement and typically have no clue, heck they look at you with a blank stare when you tell them it has disc brakes and their computer says it only had drums that year.
Removed components from 76 for upgrade on a 65. Took the I Beams with everything attached, including preportion valve and booster. Purchased new brake line; with flaring and tube bending tool, took couple hours. Suggest not bothering with MC, can purchased from local NAPA dealership for $45 new, no exchange necessary. Can purchase MC with the fittings on either side. Majority of members recommend removing brake pedals with electrical brake switch. I completed upgrade before coming across article and used original brake pedals and pressure switch. Tapped a 'T' fitting and installed in series with proportion valve. Has been working fine on both of my 65's for fast several years. Suggest run search, topic has come up on number of occasions. Came across a web site another member provide, hopefully still viewable. http://www.mongrelmotorsports.homest...f100discs.html

You have to remember all the parts when you work on these trucks. the year of manufacture is usless when doing upgrades. its like asking for head gaskets for a 514 in your 66....
That is unless you like messing with their heads...
Ouch on that compression fitting, wack the guy that did that over the head............
Order a master cyl for a 79 F100 source in the yard a prop valve for a disc brake application. Orded a set of new brake lines from NPD they have the cheapest pricing on the complete front to back brake lines. no fuss or muss and no cutting. they will fit the eariler 65 66 twin chassis.
I have on my 66 crew cab a booster from a 79, lever type and a 79 master cyl. also all new stainless steel brake lines.
