Has anyone swapped a 5 speed into their 4 speed truck? Right now I have a NP435 4 speed but I have a 351 W out of a Crown Vic, so I figured a 5 speed off of a 302 or a 351(dont know if you could get it with the 351) out of a late 80s truck would work. Its 4X4 though, so I was worried about the transfer case causing problems. Anyone know?
Thanks
Aaron
to be honest i haven't done the work but i have looked into doing it. from what i know using the T-5 is a mistake because they are meant for light weight cars. and the world class ones aren't any better. what you need to look into is the Tremac TKO. It should handle the weight of the vehicle better than the T-5. [a href="www.fortesparts.com"] Forte's tranmissions [/a] has them. The input shaft of the tko has more splines but if you get ahold of that guy he'll help you. you can use the same bell housing for a t-5 as the tko but you might look into a scatter sheild. lakewood has one that will work. just a bit of safty incase the inconseivable happens. Also [a href="www.fordmuscle.com"] Ford Muscle Magazine [/a] has an article about the swap in place of a AOD which should help as well. If you have any questions i'll try to help.
Good luck

Well i just wrote this message and then realized that you have a 4x4 which makes a fair amout of this moot. however forte's has measurements that might give you the information you need. good luck
If you use a 5 spd from an 80's truck, make sure to get the ZF tranny and avoid the M5OD. The specific identifiers can be found on the 87-96 list. Most of the work will probably come from converting from a mechanical clutch to a hydraulic clutch.
LoudFords, what tranny you have mated to your 79? I guess I could always look at swapping an auto into it. I really just need something other than a granny geared 4 speed that will fit between the engine and tranfer case and bolt up to the Windsor.
Thanks
Aaron
If you look in the latest issue of Mustangs and Fords, there is a feature on a 69 Mustang fastback w/ a 428 in it where the owner has put a Tremec TKO 5 speed in it. The company she used to engineer it was listed in the article. I've also talked to some local "experts" here about the viability. The T5 or even world class T5 are deemed too delicate for the weight and torque of a truck. But Tremec's 3550 and TKO are built for more torque and HP and can be made to work w/o having to retrofit a different clutch linkage as I understand it. The OEM 5 speeds in most newer Ford truck is a breakage prone Mazda tranny in most cases. The ZF's are expensive and relatively rare to find and you might as well consider the Tremecs for that price range. I see the TKO's advertised for about 1500.
Ok well, so much for keeping the manual, time for an auto, now way I am going to spend that much. Are there any autos that will fit in the same amount of space that the NP435 takes up?
Thanks
Aaron
Aaron, no way you are going to spend how much ? A swap to an automatic will cost at least as much as a swap to a ZF. ZFs go for about 500$ in salvage yards around here. Keep in mind an auto tranny will cost you plenty of power as well as cash. DF
Where are you that you are finding ZF 5speeds for $500? I can't even find a V8 Ford style T5 around here and if I did it would be at least that much. BTW I have a smallblock C6 that I'm apparently not selling to my friend now that he wants to sell his truck for a mileage miser. The C6 I have has a fairly long tailshaft and most likely would require a shortened driveline w/ a slip yoke end.
I'm in SW michigan. For reasons I don't understand the local gov't spreads tons of rock salt on the roads every winter. So people get used to driving like it is summer, and then we get a cold snap and the salt doesn't work and folks are wrecking stuff. Also with all the salt on the roads most trucks don't last long. The bodies get rusty and they get junked. I wouldn't even consider a T-5 behind anything other than a small six. They just are not strong enough. DF
