I took my truck through emissions today and the guy said I needed a SPK, or port vacuum switch, or spark delay valve, or a trans. regulated spark control. To my suprise (not) he had no idea what any of these things are. Well neither do I. Can someone help me out here? The truck is a 79 F250 4x4 CC 460 C6.
Thanks
Can you even get your truck past emissions with a 460? I thought states with emissions testing required them to have stock engines. The 460 is the best engine Ford NEVER put in a 70's 4X4.
I smogged and registered my 76 F250 4x4 with a 460 after visiting a "Smog Refferey" in the state of California. The Department of Motor Vehicles refferred me there, where I just needed to attach the equipment that was equivilent to stock for that vehicle. Even though the 460 wasn't stock, I just needed to mount like equipment that would have been on the stock engine.
For me, I had to go fishing for mid 70's 460 lincoln parts, which entaled air injection rales, smog pump, a lincoln 460 air cleaner, and charcoal canister. I made the stove heat riser out of a piece of pipe cut to fit around my headers with a hose screw clamp to hold it on. Then got some riser ducting from the help section of Car Quest Auto Parts store to go to the valve on the air cleaner.
He signed me off and I was on the way to the DMV. The DMV in your state should be able to get you info to contact a State Smog Refferey. (sp) This was a while ago but I am sure they still exsist. Maybe more of a Govt contract thing these days though, but DMV should set you up.

This spark thing was the only thing I was missing to pass I think. Here in a AZ they dont care what motor you have as long as it passes the standards they have for that vehicle. I guess I am off to Napa.
THanks guys
put a 400 sticker on the valve cover they'll never know the diference
That's funny LOL, but there's only one problem with that. If he checks emmissions for a 400, the 460 will screw up his emmissions test with more emmisions than a 400. I think that came out all wrong. Doesn't a 460 pollute more than the 400? if so he still won't pass emmissions. Allright that makes more sense. Might be wrong though.

Not necessarily. If the 460 is in good shape it can be running quite clean. You're thinking that the larger engine will be belching out more pollutants. That's not how the test works. The test is how much pollutants are in a given volume of air. Meausred in either % or parts per million (PPM). There is no measurement of how much volume of air the engine is consuming. The 460 could pass the sniffer just fine.
Especially if you used Lincoln smog parts from a wrecking yard that were designed for a mid 70's 460. It would perform as designed, if in fact it even did make a difference.
